Okay. Science. It's all about change. Change.
Change. Like the world today? Like the world today.
Change. This morning we're learning
the difference between physical and chemical changes.
Thank you so much for being here.
You gotta mix things up with us. What are we doing today? Let's do it.
Okay. So first of all, physical changes. I call them boring.
You can call them what you will. So take the paper towel on the end.
Rip that paper towel up. Rip it. Just at least once.
Ah, physical change.
Physical change.
Still paper.
Still paper, yeah.
Now, you can crumble it, still paper.
The molecule's the same, they're just rearranged.
But if you're super old like me, hey get off me.
Okay, there we go.
You can use fire and it'll be fine.
Michael loves that part.
It's a chemical change, right?
Where'd it go?
It disappeared, like magic paper.
Yes, flash paper.
I love flash paper. Flash paper is pretty cool.
Did I do that? No.
Now what we're going to do, you're going to have your own change.
So you have a small bowl on your plate.
You're going to work together, so
pour the water in.
When you pour the water in,
one of you crack the egg and put the egg in.
I got the water.
And then you can...
Oh, look at you go.
Scramble. Mix.
Whisk it up.
Then you're going to pour in, well, you can mix it up,
sure, just use that white spoon, get it going.
Okay.
All right.
Still eggs, still water, not very exciting.
Now I want you to take the white powder that's closest to you,
that's sodium bicarbonate, that's our base.
Ah, yes, what is sodium bicarbonate?
Sodium?
Yeah, and then you just dump it in the stirrer.
Now I did...
Reduce your recipe, the, oh my, you're messy,
sorry, because of the size of the bowl you have.
So right now we have boring, we have egg and baking soda and water,
boring, let's add citric acid.
So you're going to sprinkle the citric acid.
Can I go all of it?
Yeah, I like to do it slow and go.
Sugar.
Oh, you can stir it?
You can stir it, sure.
So you've got the citric acid mixing in with the baking soda,
and it is going to explode.
So don't eat this.
Don't, you know.
It looks like marshmallows.
Oh, sure, take mine.
That smells weird.
It's going to grow.
Oh!
And it's going to be thick.
So we've got, this is one of our chemical changes, a chemical reaction.
You got a big bowl.
You called me messy.
It does smell good.
I will say that.
It does smell good.
I don't know why.
So we've, it's full of citric acid in there.
It smells nice.
It's Dave's favorite, Peeps.
It's, oh yeah.
Oh, yeah.
So see that foam?
Andrew, yours is growing like crazy.
And it's thick.
So when you have.
An acid-base reaction we've talked about before,
one of the things for a chemical change is
a gas is produced, or there could be a color change,
or there could be a change in temperature,
endothermic or exothermic, gas, the bubbles,
or you could create something new, which you
were about to try.
Oh, I know, excitement.
Here we go.
So you have another tray, which you can maneuver
however you need to to get closer
to you, and here's what we have.
Oh, this is interesting.
So you have the
The colored part is food coloring.
That's sodium alginate, okay, made from seaweed.
And then in the middle, the clear cups
are calcium chloride solution with water.
So I was going to give you droppers to do this,
but it's so thick it gets stuck in the dropper.
So start dropping some of that.
Of the color?
Color, yep.
Go ahead.
You can do it too.
No, get it in there.
Get it in there.
You can do it in mine.
Yeah, go for it.
Oh, no, no, in here.
Oh!
Or in your little, or your eye.
Oh, that's fine.
It looks like a worm.
It's in the water.
You can squeeze
it and there's
water trapped
inside.
So it is a crosslink polymer,
but it's a little bit different than your regular slime.
I can't wait to clean this up.
Ha, ha, ha, ha.
Did you get it?
I got it.
Don't be afraid.
That's why I did the gloves.
Yeah, don't be afraid.
So it's a cross-linked polymer, but it's a little bit different.
So it's like a slime worm, a polymer worm.
Y'all like it?
I like it.
Is that different from what we would see on a lava lamp?
It's different.
It looks like the family.
Yeah, let's go.
Yeah, I'm curious.
Looks cool, I love it.
Yeah, they love it.
Okay, so you're getting on the run up to the holidays.
Plenty of yes, just crossed
our favorite shows like the year celebrations.
We do shows, birthday parties,
all the stuff and all the stuff like this stuff.
Well, now, yeah, we can do it.
That type of stuff.
Andre, this was
Sorry.
You guys are excited?
I'm changing pace.
How long will this last?
Like this jelly?
Quite a while, actually.
Yeah, unless you squeeze it and all the liquid comes out.
Oh, busted.
The cleanup begins, but we're not quite done with you yet.
Got something special for you next block, too.
Andrea, thank you so much.
Thank you.
We'll be right back.
See you.
