AI GeneratedCatastrophic flooding has struck the Georgia-Tennessee border, marking the third major U.S. flooding event in ten days. Record-breaking water levels from the Ocoee River forced thousands to evacuate, necessitating numerous boat rescues. While the region needs rain to combat long-term drought, experts warn that long-range models predict a highly active and wet winter and spring.
Another region here in the U.S. is experiencing catastrophic flooding.
This is now the third event in just the last 10 days.
Towns along the Georgia-Tennessee border
were under several feet of water.
Heavy rain led to historic levels of high water yesterday morning.
And meteorologist Cody Matz shows us
what's happening there and has details.
Cody, good morning.
Yeah, good morning.
The cleanup process now getting underway for many of those residents.
The drone video behind me showing
the widespread flooding across the Georgia-Tennessee border
We'll be right back.
rain fell in just a few hours.
Now here's some more video of those floodwaters flowing through
the Ocoee River in southeastern Tennessee and northern Georgia.
The Ocoee River State Park says
the water was flowing 12 times faster than normal after cresting
at a record level 18 feet. This
sent water flowing into the towns of McKaysville,
Georgia and Copper Hill, Tennessee, forcing
thousands to flee their homes.
Unfortunately, some just could not leave fast enough.
Sheriff's deputies knocked on the front door and said,
you need to evacuate now.
But by the time my wife got dressed and I got the animals,
they had to send a boat for us.
Now dozens of rescues by boat have been reported
and police were also going door to door where they could to help some
of the trapped residents. A mandatory 12 hour curfew was put
into place overnight by the sheriff's office in Polk County, Tennessee,
where that is located, which just lifted a few minutes ago at 6
a.m. Now it's still far too early to assess the damage, but it will
likely be extensive recovery efforts will more than likely take years.
Now this is the third location in the U.S. in the last 10 days
to experience record flooding,
which also included the Space Coast of Florida a couple days ago
and parts of the Four Corners
region last week in the desert southwest.
Hopefully not a sign of things to come,
but that's just kind of how you get rid of drought.
It's been so dry in the U.S. as a whole
in the last like 15 to 18 months.
We really do need the rain and now it's just coming at a cost.
Just maybe a sign of things to come.
The brand-new basically winter and spring outlook from some
of the long-range computer models came out yesterday.
Shows a very active pattern.
We're actually going to talk to the state climatologist coming up
on all day a little afternoon.
You can catch that, of course,
if you can't watch on all day through the course of the weekend.
Active for us here in Minnesota.
Active for the U.S. as a whole.
Could be a lot of precipitation.
Okay.
We'll see.
We'll discuss more coming up at noon.
Alright.
We just...
Hmm.
That's your how I feel about it.
