And a proposal to build a data center
in Lake County is drawing some major criticism.
A judge could decide the next steps
for this massive project as soon as today.
So we're checking in with Saquon, who joins us from the Lake
County Courthouse to explain some of the dynamics at play here.
Say good morning.
Hey Anthony, good morning to you. Yeah, in just
a few hours here we know a judge is going to hear arguments on a motion
to dismiss a lawsuit that was brought by neighborhood groups attempting
to block the development of a data center in Grays Lake.
Now that lawsuit was filed back in July targeting
the village of Grays Lake and T5 data centers.
Neighbors behind this lawsuit accuse village officials
of overstepping zoning laws, violating due process
and breaking the Open Meetings Act to get this project through.
Those same neighbors say they are deeply concerned about the noise,
the impact on local wetlands,
and just how much water and power this facility could use up.
But the village and developers have continued to push back here,
saying this site will bring in an estimated $1.4 billion in property
taxes over the next 20 years, creating hundreds of construction jobs
and over 1,000 permanent positions once it's finally complete.
Even as this legal battle plays out,
Fox Chicago has learned work has already started.
In November, the village issued
its first building permit for an initial 800,000 square
foot facility in Grays Lake.
Now today's hearing at 9 a.m. will address
that motion to dismiss and we may not get
a final ruling here, but we are expecting
to hear from those opponents along with their
attorneys after those arguments wrap up, Anthony.
