Montgomery County where construction crews hit
a gas pipeline causing a massive amount of jet fuel to spill out.
Sky Fox over the scene this afternoon along the 300 block
of River Road in Bridgeport and Jeff Skawerski at the scene tonight.
Jeff, the leak has been stopped.
Do you know how long the cleanup is going to take though?
Yeah, it could take days, maybe even weeks.
We are told a significant amount of jet fuel leaked
when construction crews hit a pipe underneath the ground earlier
this afternoon here in Bridgeport, Montgomery County.
As you can see behind me right now, there are emergency crews out here,
including the Environmental Protection Agency.
There was a brief shelter in place that has since been lifted.
Police say there is no threat.
To the community here
in Bridgeport Montgomery County near Route 23 River Road.
Late this afternoon as emergency crews
are called around 3 p.m. to shut off the Sunoco valve near River Road,
Route 23 and Bridgeport near Coach Street.
This is also a very residential area.
Upper Marion Township police say a third-party construction crew
were putting up electrical towers at the insurance auto auction
when a crew struck a 14-inch underground Sunoco pipeline
and jet fuel started pouring out.
We are told the spill is contained to the area
and adjacent area, the EP.
EPA, DEP and Lewis Environmental Services are among
those out here conducting emergency response using oil absorbent pads.
The cleanup is expected to go through the night.
Residents who live in the area tell me they were very scared.
We just smelled this tremendous amount of fuel, like gasoline smell.
Everybody was nervous in the neighborhood.
We didn't know what happened at the time.
You know,
Fire crews were coming down the street from every which way,
every angle. It was surreal. It was
unreal. I just noticed something was wrong.
Talked to the neighbors. We have a really
caring, wonderful community.
Everyone wanted to make sure each other was okay first.
And we did that, and then we started getting
the alerts from Montgomery County,
and then it was shelter in place.
I was really worried.
I thought, should I get out of town?
I just didn't want to be here if it was going
to be like an explosive situation, obviously.
Yeah, and do you feel a little bit better right now?
Well, now I feel better.
The smell is definitely different,
and they lifted that shelter in place.
As you can see, the crews are out here.
The EPA and DEP have set up air monitoring.
Again, Upper Merion Township Police say there
is no danger to the community at this hour.
They are advising motorists to stay away from this area just outside
of River Road here, Route 23 in Bridgeport.
We're live in Montgomery County.
