I felt useless. I felt like I couldn't do anything for her.
And she just looked at me,
grabbed me by the face and said, it wasn't my fault.
Friday evening, Anthony was at SFO with his girlfriend,
Paola Albornoz Hernandez,
a 23-year-old UC Berkeley student.
They were about to board a flight
when she was suddenly taken into custody by ICE.
Immigrant rights attorney Nicholas Debremaker is now handling her case.
An ICE agent came to sit next to her,
struck up a conversation, didn't identify himself,
and asked if her name was first a different name that wasn't hers.
She said, no, this is not my name.
And he said, oh, is your name Paula?
She said, yes.
And then he showed his ICE badge.
Wednesday, ICE officials pushed back against claims
that their officer failed to properly identify himself.
Paola, a Colombian national, arrived in the U.S. in September 2022.
According to ICE, she was legally authorized
to remain in the country through March 2023.
Debris maker says Paola is here on a valid work visa
and has also filed an asylum application.
He submitted a habeas corpus petition challenging
the lawfulness of her detention.
Did you hear somebody who complied
with everything that the government asked of her?
Every step of the way as part of her asylum proceedings,
and they detained her anyway.
It's believed to be the first time
a UC Berkeley student has been arrested by ICE,
and the university says it's currently
assisting Debris Maker with their case.
Three dollars now! Three dollars!
Wednesday afternoon, a demonstration on campus where Paola
is a junior pursuing a bachelor's in business administration.
Anthony racked with guilt because he planned the trip,
hoping to introduce her to Portland and hiking in the area.
I'm feeling sad, I'm feeling angry, I'm feeling overwhelmed
at the fact that she's in there and I'm out here.
Friends describing Paola as someone
who always put others first and a top student.
Her attorney adding that she has no criminal record.
It's just unbelievable the government would choose
to detain somebody like that rather than celebrating her.
Speaking a day after Democrats regained both the House and the Senate,
Debris Maker adding this.
We hope that Congress will take steps.
to launch congressional inquiries on this case, on Paula's case.
We're also asking that Congress will pass a private bill for Paula
so that she can have permanent status in the country.
And tonight her attorney
also filing a temporary restraining order against ICE.
She is currently being held at ICE's California City Detention Center,
which has recently come out under scrutiny over allegations of unsafe
and unsanitary conditions. Claudine.
