The election are bringing new hope to cannabis shops in the state.
Several stores in our area have been fighting to stay open
as a hemp ban is set to take effect next month.
Yeah, the election could change
that depending what happens in the future.
Abril Preciado takes us through what one store owner says
this will mean for them
and how not everyone is on board with this, Abril.
That's right, you guys. Now, one business in Wauwatosa tells us now
that the governor-elect David Crowley will be taking office
in the Badger State, they are hopeful come the new year,
changes will be made that will help them keep their doors open.
For Erin Kelly, keeping the doors
of her cannabis boutique open in Wauwatosa is personal.
It's just been really tough with the thought of losing this business.
She, along with other business owners in the hemp industry,
are forced to shut down after
a federal hemp regulation takes effect December 11th.
But Kelly says a recent change in Wisconsin's legislative landscape
is bringing some relief and hope.
So we didn't expect the Democratic trifecta
and very excited that that did happen.
And now we just need our Democrats to take some action
and to save this industry.
While legalizing marijuana in the state
is something Governor-elect David Crowley has openly supported,
Other groups are preparing to fight it.
Governor-elect David Crowley has said
that he wants recreational marijuana in Wisconsin.
And so we are going to do everything we can to reach voters,
to reach constituents, to
draw public attention to this, to draw our concerns.
Daniel Degner is the president
and CEO of Wisconsin Family Action and shares his concerns.
We're going to see issue after issue that comes up.
We oppose recreational marijuana coming to Wisconsin,
especially because it harms families, it harms individuals.
For now, business owners like Kelly are staying optimistic
her business will remain open in the new year.
This is my baby, so I have no plans to get rid of her.
But the plan is to wait it out
and to work closely with our representatives to get that plan in place
and get Kelly's Greens back to business.
And Kelly says she and other businesses are hopeful Democrats will take
action with new legislation in the new year that will help them save
the existing hemp industry before it becomes legalized.
In the newsroom, Avril Preciado, Fox 6 News.
Abreu, Kelly's name, her last name is Green, and she sells marijuana.
It's actually Kelly, but that's the name of her business group.
Kelly's Dreams.
Okay, got it.
