This election day historic for many reasons
from states flipping blue for the first time in decades
and some of the largest margins of victory we've seen for this state.
But some candidates, especially around the nation,
are celebrating some important firsts in our country's history.
Archie Newhurst standing by in the live center with more. Good morning.
Hey, good morning, Hannah.
Yeah, some firsts across the country and also here in Minnesota.
So let's start here. Hakeem Jeffries set to become the first black
speaker of the House after Democrats regained control of the House.
But as we look here in our own state, Peggy Flanagan is making history,
becoming the first indigenous woman elected to the Senate.
The St. Louis Park native was first elected to office in 2005.
And now more than 20 years later,
she will be the first Native American woman in the House.
Now, moving south to Texas, where the state had
a historic night flipping to Democrats for the first time since 1994,
ending the longest drought for Democrats in any state.
And adding to that history, there is their new governor,
who you see governor-elect Gina Hinojosa in Texas, becoming Texas'
first Latina governor and first Democratic governor since 1990.
She ousted longtime Republican incumbent Greg Abbott.
And staying in the South, moving to Georgia, former Atlanta mayor
and Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms defeats Republican Rick Jackson,
flipping that seat in favor of the Democrats.
She is the first black woman governor in any state.
Tonight should remind us all
that no matter what community we come from, Georgia is not
defined by one moment in time or by one person.
It's been defined by all of us,
and I will be a governor for everyone in this state.
Yeah, also notable this morning, other candidates making history,
Byron Daniels becomes Florida's first black governor in New Hampshire,
the first openly gay male U.S. senator in Chris Pappas,
and then in Michigan,
Abdul El-Sayed becomes the country's first Muslim U.S. senator.
So some history-making races kind of all across
the country here that we have been seeing so far today.
Yeah, no kidding.
Okay, Chinu Her, taking a wide look for us in the Live Center.
Thank you.
