He celebrates the mobilization of voters and outlines a vision for healthcare, tax equity, and educational reform, framing the night as a historical turning point for the United States.
What an incredible night it is already shaping up to be.
I could not be prouder to be with you to make sure
that we have victories up and down the ballot
because I believe this is the night
that historians will say things started to turn
for the better in the United States of America in the 2020s.
I've been traveling this great land.
I've been traveling this great state.
Just a couple days ago, I sat at the dining room table in our house
and made sure that our five-year-old twins,
Gus and Penelope, came over.
I said, you've got to watch this.
I said, what are you doing? Why are you coloring, Papa?
I said, this isn't coloring.
This is the most important thing that a citizen can do.
And I pulled out the ballot, and I wanted them to see it.
When I filled in that little circle
for our next U.S. Senator, Abdullah Sayed,
I wanted them to see it when I filled in that little circle
for our next governor, Jocelyn Benson.
I wanted to see those little circles fill in to elect
a Democratic U.S. House of Representatives
and to make sure that our state house
and state senator in the right hands and all those other
great offices up and down the ticket.
I'll admit that the twins did not make it through
to the school board candidates and the constitutional questions,
but I did, and I know
you did, and I know you did everything in your power
to turn out every single vote for victory
You mobilized the fired-up Democrats.
You invited in the disaffected independents.
And you helped us create a whole bunch
of what I like to call future former Republicans
who are ready to join our coalition.
We didn't go out there and say, I told you so.
We went out there and said, join us, and we will make things better.
Not just better than today, but better than before.
And we are not going to the old status quo either.
We showed that this is not a 50-50 country when it comes to the idea
that health care ought to be a right for every single American,
not a privilege for a few.
We showed that America and Michigan are not closely divided
when it comes to the idea that billionaires
and trillionaires ought to pay at least as high a tax level
as school teachers and nurses and firefighters in this country.
We reminded everybody that there is a super majority of Americans
and Michiganders who
believe that the wealthiest economy
in the world ought to have the best public schools
in the world and that money has no place in our politics
and partisan gerrymandering has
no place in our electoral system.
Folks, the results are still coming in,
but to put it very, very mildly, I'd rather be
us right now.
Now we know we got a lot of work to do.
We're going to have to work to deliver.
We're going to have to face the fact that the White House
is going to be in the wrong hands for two more years.
But even this White House will have to hear
the powerful message that we sent from the state of Michigan
and from communities across the country.
They can't ignore the American people no longer
because we have the last word when it comes to election night.
So all I'm here to say is thank you, thank you,
thank you for doing everything in your power
to make life better in this country,
to make sure that when they ask us, including my little kids,
ask us what the hell was going on in America in the 2020s,
we'll say, yeah, things got pretty
unpleasant for a while, but look at what we did next.
Look at what we did starting that November
night in the fall of 2026 to make sure
that America moved in the right direction.
Thank you for making that possible, and let's make sure
we show everybody we get that the work has just begun.
Keep it up. Let's celebrate.
Savor this moment, and we'll take it from here.
Thank you, Michigan.
