Nikita Kucherov’s Trade Request Has the Lightning Repeating the Steven Stamkos Mistake
Nov 3, 2026
The Tampa Bay Lightning are potentially about
to lose another franchise legend because they apparently
can't figure out how to communicate in contract negotiations.
First it was Steven Stamkos, now it's Nikita Kucherov.
Yes, the reigning Hart Trophy winner has
officially requested a trade out of Tampa Bay.
On Friday, reports surfaced that Kucherov had informed the Lightning
and his teammates that he wouldn't be resigning
when his contract expires this summer.
And on Monday, he explained why.
You know, it was never about the money for me.
I'm
sorry,
What?
We're talking about a two-time Stanley Cup champion, a two-time MVP,
and the guy who literally just passed Stamkos
as Tampa Bay's all-time leading scorer.
Now, there is a financial disagreement here.
Kucherov is reportedly seeking
a six-year extension worth about $20 million annually.
Meanwhile, Tampa's offers have reportedly
been closer to $13 to $15 million.
But here's where this gets interesting. Remember 2024?
Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay's longtime captain,
publicly expressed his frustrations with the lack of extension talks.
He wanted to stay. He wanted to finish his career in Tampa,
but negotiations went nowhere and he ultimately signed with Nashville.
And here's the kicker. Julian Brisebois responded
to Kucherov's trade request by saying
the Lightning have absolutely no intention of trading him.
So now Tampa Bay has a superstar who wants out,
a GM who refuses to trade him, and the possibility
of watching another franchise legend walk for nothing.
The Lightning can argue that they have to make smart financial
decisions. Fine, that's part of running a hockey team.
But there's a difference between making a business decision and making
your best players feel like they're not even worth a conversation.
Tampa already learned that lesson the hard way with Stamkos.
Are they seriously about to do it again?
