I'm outside Democratic nominee for Senate Abdul
El-Sayed's final watch party ahead of the
midterm elections on November 3rd.
People here are excited about his progressive politics. They are
also very keen to find out if America is going
to be getting its first Muslim senator.
Hopefully not only, you know,
we make history the first Muslim candidate ever, senator ever.
Which is going to get a lot of people angry, so we want that.
And also because he's a progressive guy,
and it's the roots of Detroit, of Michigan, right?
Which is a union state. This is where the union started.
This is where the car was invented.
Yeah, I'm just here to support Abdul. I'm really excited.
I just believe in, you know, creating a better world for our kids,
and that's something that Abdul talks about a lot,
whether it be for Medicare for All,
standing against the actions in Palestine.
I'm going to go ahead and sign.
Protect the kids.
This will be just one more push for the Democratic Party
to get its you-know-what together.
Yeah, there.
I think this is going to help us get a lot more respect from anyone.
If you have an ethnic name, if you don't have
an ethnic name, wherever you are in the workplace,
or if you're an aspiring politician,
he has brought the respect to our ethnic name.
So that's one thing that I really love about him being a Muslim.
When they say, oh, you can't win your name,
how are you going to do that?
I'm like, you don't understand, I didn't bet on me.
I bet on the goodness of the people of the state of Michigan.
When they come for our public schools, we won't back down.
When they come for us with ICE, we won't back down.
When they come for any of us, we won't back down.
Because Detroit is our democracy and we intend to use it.
My name is Abdul El-Sayed
and I hope to serve you as your next United States Senator.
Detroit, thank you so much.
What are you going to do if you become Senator?
I'm going to...
The outcome of this election could give us
an indication of the direction in which the
Democratic Party is headed.
