We've got a week to go until the NFL trade deadline
and I think it's very fair to say
the Giants are going to be buyers this season, not sellers.
Why? Well, look at the standings.
They're in first place in the NFC East,
commanding lead over the Cowboys and Commanders and Eagles.
Knowing John Harbaugh and how aggressive he wants to be,
working in concert with Joe Shane, the general manager,
the Giants want to add to this roster
and really make a push in the final stretch of games here.
What do they want to do?
I believe their interest is twofold.
Number one, do something to enhance their running game.
That means add running backs, a running back.
They also want to improve their run defense.
That means adding an interior run stopper.
Okay, running backs first, right?
The guy who everyone wants to hear about is Jonathan Taylor.
He is an absolute stud.
27-year-old from the Colts, great player at Wisconsin,
great player in the NFL, was
a rushing leader not many years ago.
Now, why would the Colts trade him?
Because the Colts are in free fall.
They've already traded their great guard, Quinton Nelson.
They've already traded their very good
defensive tackle, DeForest Buckner.
So they are in sell mode.
Can Jonathan Taylor be acquired?
Maybe it's going to take a lot.
Do the Giants want to give up a bunch of draft picks?
Don't forget, the Giants only have five picks in the 2027 NFL draft.
They have their first, second, and third.
They don't have a fourth.
They don't have a fifth.
And they have two six-round picks.
So they do not have a lot of draft equity to use here.
But Jonathan Taylor is a difference-making running back.
And if they could get him,
he would instantly upgrade their running back situation.
He would be RB1.
Don't forget.
John Harbaugh in the offseason took a look at Cam Scatterboo
and Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary and said,
OK, if we can go get Jeremiah Love in the draft, let's do that.
So he's telling you what he thought about
this running back stable the Giants have.
Good players, but not the bell cow.
Jonathan Taylor would certainly be that.
Next level, how about Tony Pollard?
The Giants are very familiar with him from his time with the Cowboys.
He is now with the Titans.
Titans are having a terrible year.
They're probably in sell mode.
And Tony Pollard, through it all,
is on pace for his fifth straight 1,000-yard season.
He would be an upgrade.
And I could see Tony Pollard
and Cam Scadaboo being a very interesting one-two punch for the Giants.
Another very interesting name.
How about Derrick Henry?
A few years ago, John Harbaugh put
in to sign Derrick Henry as a 29-year-old running back.
When Harbaugh was with the Ravens,
and that turned out to be a great signing for the Ravens.
So will Harbaugh do it again?
Will he try to get Derrick Henry again?
The Ravens are having a very poor season.
Now Lamar Jackson's out for the year.
So they could trade someone like Derrick Henry.
Will they?
We'll see.
He's averaging a career-low 4.0 yards per carry.
He's on the decline, but he's leading the league in rushing attempts.
He's got eight touchdowns.
He's a stud.
That would be more of a short-term fix.
Jonathan Taylor would be more of a fix for this year and next year,
so that's more exciting.
Derrick Henry is a guy to look
at if the Ravens are going to be in sell mode.
Okay, now as far as defensive players.
You have Grover Stewart from the Colts.
We mentioned that the cults...
Should be in sell mode.
Maybe Grover Stewart is a guy they can get.
The Giants are really looking
for an interior defensive lineman to pair with D.J. Reeder,
who was a tremendous free agent acquisition.
He's doing a really good job.
But they're kind of light there for that next defensive tackle,
run-stopping presence.
Questions?
Questions?
Grover Stewart would represent an upgrade.
Questions?
Questions?
How about Dalvin Tomlinson, a former Giants first-round pick?
The Chargers have not won a game,
so Dalvin Tomlinson, he's coached by Jim Harbaugh.
Jim could call John.
They could get a deal done.
It would help.
A. Sean Robinson, former Giants player from a few years ago,
is having a good year for the Bucs.
Do the Bucs want to sell him?
I don't know about that.
Don't forget the Giants were in on Jeffrey Simmons,
the great player from the Titans who was traded to the Bears.
And John Harbaugh called the Titans owner, did not get through to her,
but left a message the Giants were interested
in hearing about a Jeffrey Simmons trade.
I'm not sure, as reports have indicated,
they would have given up two first-round picks.
I'm not so sure about that, but that's where we are.
Running back, defensive tackle,
that's the position the Giants want to add.
They will be aggressive with John Harbaugh.
It'll be very interesting to see how it goes from here.
