Residents of building wrecked by fire in Sud-Ouest return home to gather belongings
Nov 2, 2026
Residents of a building in Little Burgundy
that burned down are picking up the pieces,
trying to figure out next steps.
Two dozen households were evacuated in this condo complex
as flames engulfed the roof on Sunday afternoon.
The fire alarm is still blaring, the doors are boarded up,
and the roof has completely caved in.
People who lived here are being allowed back
in to gather their belongings,
at least what's left of them.
I just have the clothes on my back right now,
so I'm hoping that at least some of my clothes I can save.
Initially, I thought it was somebody pranking,
and then the alarm went off.
I could see the smoke and the fire out of my balcony,
so I grabbed my pets and I got out of the place.
More than a hundred firefighters
were spraying the building from all angles.
It took more than 10 hours to put out the fire.
No one was injured. The Canadian Red Cross says
it's putting up one of the 24 households in temporary housing.
We're just steps away from
Atwater Market and people
who live in the neighborhood say they're shaken up.
I'm just one block that way
and there it is like black smoke piercing the sky and then
The closer I got to it, I saw the building set aflame.
I was worried for my building because there was black smoke everywhere.
It was pretty scary. I've never seen a fire that intense.
And there's massive amounts of fire trucks and everybody outside.
The Montreal Fire Department says five alarm fires like
this are extremely rare in the city,
but this is the second in just three weeks.
An apartment building in the Saint-Michel area suffered the same fate.
The cause of both of the fires is under investigation.
