This is 19-year-old Kevin Hines,
and he's only alive today because a sea lion saved him from
committing suicide. Today, I'll be diving into the story,
and I'll be showing you the insane
miracle that changed the country forever.
Kevin Hines was a 19-year-old boy from San Francisco,
and he struggled with severe depression.
One morning, he decided he had had enough and was
going to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
But what caused him to do this? Well,
as a child, Kevin Hines grew up in San Francisco,
and he struggled as a child.
During his teenage years, he began experiencing severe depression,
paranoia, and disturbing voices that affected
the way he saw himself and the world around him.
On September 25th in the year 2000, Kevin had had enough, so that
morning he made his way to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
While Kevin was deciding if he was going to jump or not,
there was an unexpected guest waiting in the water below him.
Kevin was hoping someone would come up to him and ask if he was okay,
just something to make him not jump, but that didn't happen,
and after a few minutes, Kevin made the decision
that would change his life, he decided to jump off the bridge.
Kevin fell more than 200 feet below hitting the water,
and the impact caused catastrophic
injuries. But something happened that Kevin would never forget.
Almost immediately after jumping,
he experienced intense regret.
Kevin suddenly understood that he wanted another chance,
but now he was injured and surrounded by water,
desperately trying to survive.
Despite his injuries, he managed to get his head above the water,
and he later described praying and begging for another chance at life.
A woman who witnessed the incident contacted someone she knew
who was serving in the Coast Guard,
and that connection helped bring rescuers to Kevin,
but there was another part of the story
that Kevin would later describe as unbelievable.
While struggling to stay afloat, he felt something
repeatedly moving underneath him, and it turned out to be a sea lion.
He believes the animal
helped keep him afloat while he waited for rescue,
and the story has attracted attention over the
over the years because of just how unusual this encounter was.
The sea lion kept him afloat long enough until rescuers came
and pulled him out of the water.
His injuries took months to heal, but once they finally did,
Kevin made a decision that would change his life
and so many others around him.
Having decided to share his story
and make it his life mission to save as many people as possible
from the same circumstances that once troubled him.
San Francisco even installed a safety net
on the Golden Gate Bridge in his honor to stop
as many people from making that same mistake.
