Based on the manga by Machiko Kyo, the film follows San and Mayu, two schoolgirls living on a peaceful island as World War II reaches their shores. When they are ordered to help care for wounded soldiers inside a cave hospital, their young lives are changed forever. As violence and loss close in, the girls struggle to hold on to hope, memory, and each other in a world being torn apart.
