What did the Denisovans look like? For years, these ancient humans were known largely through DNA and a handful of fossil fragments. Now, research on the Xujiayao fossils from northern China offers new clues to their appearance and their place in the human story.

Scientists analyzed ancient proteins from two Xujiayao specimens, dated to between approximately 199,000 and 138,000 years ago. The protein evidence supports a Denisovan affiliation, while comparisons with other fossils suggest that Denisovans may have shared a recognizable combination of skull and dental features. Nature

We explore the Xujiayao discovery, what ancient proteins can tell us, and how the fossils compare with the Harbin skull and other ancient humans from East Asia. How much can these remains really tell us about the Denisovans—and how much remains open to debate?
