The family traces its origins to Dòmhnall, grandson of Somerled, from whom the clan takes its name. Somerled was a powerful 12th-century Norse-Gaelic ruler who built a maritime lordship across Argyll and the Hebrides, laying the foundations for the later Lordship of the Isles, ruled by Clan MacDonald.
