And welcome back. We have a special guest joining us
this morning. This doggy here,
Diva is her name, hoping for a second chance at a loving home.
We want to welcome Corey Keller
from Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit,
here to introduce us and share how we can help.
Yeah, thanks so much for having us, Lori.
Thank you so much for coming in.
Diva, just right there.
Diva is a diva, and she's doing great right now.
Yes, she is.
But tell us a little bit, what's Diva's story,
and why is she up for adoption again?
Sure, yeah, she actually came back to the shelter.
She was returned not due to her fault at all,
just medical issues with the family.
But she's eight years old.
She loves other dogs.
She loves cats.
She loves kids.
She loves everyone.
So, um...
She's a senior, but she is available for adoption now.
And is she German Shepherd?
Yeah, we think she's some sort of German Shepherd mix of some sort.
Yeah.
And what's her temperament?
She's just, oh, beautiful shot there of her.
She's just chilling out.
Normally, is she like that?
She can settle, but she is a Shepherd, so she can be very vocal.
So, that's why I'm sure her name is Diva.
Absolutely.
That's okay.
She knows her worth.
Now, this is the last day of October,
but this is also a special, the end of a special
month, correct?
Yeah.
It's National Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month,
and we have some specials going on at the
shelter today.
Tell me about it.
Yeah.
So, you can go in.
I believe right now we're doing like half off
our adoption fees, and it's actually for
all of our shelter animals.
But we're trying to highlight
Dogs like Diva and Victor Hugo, who's another senior kitty,
yeah, so they're both available
for adoption today.
And normally do you, within the month of October,
since it is specially designed for that adopting,
do you have a lot of dogs that come up for adoption
and do people realize that they have
these special fees and come in to adopt?
Yeah, I mean, we're always pretty consistently full, unfortunately.
Especially with medium to large breed dogs, so that's why our focus has
been even over the summer, just really highlighting them.
But we're fortunate enough to have companies like Ford Motor Company
that's actually sponsoring some of these reduced fees.
So it kind of is just contingent, but the fees are usually...
It's pretty minimal, and the animals coming spayed or neutered,
up to date on the vaccines.
We're checking everything to make sure.
And I was gonna say, and one thing I think
is great about you guys, you do give
the person who adopts a lot of support.
I mean, they're not just leaving with the dog
and then, whoops, see you later.
I mean, you actually help them out with this.
Yeah, absolutely.
I think one of the really great things about Friends
for Animals is the fact that once
you adopt, that's just at the end of the journey or the story.
We're gonna be with you all along the way.
Now, November 1st, tomorrow.
Another special month, tell me about that.
Oh yeah, we're kicking off its National Adopt-a-Senior Pet Month.
Oh, okay.
Which she kind of falls in either.
Yeah, Diva is also a senior, so.
Hi baby.
Yeah, good girl.
So senior dogs, they're usually the last
to be adopted out of the shelter, you have more
of those than the cute little puppies that come in,
tell me about that, are they harder
to adopt?
Yeah, they usually are,
and they've lived their own life already, and they're actually
really great, wonderful pets.
have to so we want to also focus
and highlight on our senior pets as well because they're
deserving of a second chance in another home.
You know it takes a special person to adopt a senior pet
because you know you're looking
at longevity obviously
but you want to make it the best life for them as possible.
What type of person usually comes in asking for a senior dog?
I think it takes a really special person
and but I think you really anybody just giving
And seeing your pet, just that, you know,
that extra chance, that second chance at living
out the rest of their life, right?
Comfortably.
So if someone wants to snatch up Diva, you can see how great she's...
Oh, couldn't ask for better.
What should they do?
How should they get in touch with you?
How long is the process, the adopting?
Sure, yeah.
