Live in a smaller Quebec community? This service picks up your bottle returns at home
Oct 31, 2026
When you live in a small community,
a bottle return center can be hard to find or a major detour.
So the city of Saint-Lin-Laurentide is using the GoConsigne service,
where they pick up your bottles and cans directly from your home.
A lot of people are just putting their can
and their bottles in the blue bins of their recycle.
Because they just don't want to go to the grocery
and exchange it and because they do not have time.
The partnership with GoConsigne,
which is a private enterprise, is also the first
to offer tax credit for people in municipalities who sign up.
We will put a line on their tax bill
and they will see how much credit they will have.
GoConsigne says residents who sign up can receive 62%,
of their bottle return. The company keeps the rest.
It's not a reduction of taxes because the people,
they pay for the deposit when they buy containers.
But if citizens would go directly to a deposit center,
a bottle return center,
they would get back 100% of the deposit they already paid.
However, Bernard says communities like Saint-Lin-Laurentide
don't have enough consignation return centers close by.
Maybe if you want to fix the problem, maybe that's...
That's the first thing to do.
Citizens can buy these white bins for bottle returns.
So far, about 500 customers have signed up for the program.
Each 30 days, we're going to send them
a text to ask them if they need a pickup.
And if they say yes, then we will give them a date.
And that's it. Easy like this.
The mayor says she would welcome consignation return centers as well,
saying the services don't totally overlap.
We can have both in our city and we will be happy.
In the meantime, GoConsigne wants
to continue being an alternative solution.
It's in talks with eight more municipalities for a similar program.
We save you the times that you're going
to need to go put your containers,
drop your containers at the return depot center for consignation.
Here in Saint-Léon-Laurentier,
the mayor says the initiative is going well.
She's hoping this project sets an example for other municipalities.
