Ever wonder how Hollywood creates those spine-chilling sound effects?
Oct 31, 2026
Are you ever watching a scary movie and you hear a really
loud bone break or maybe a whoosh of a sword or the creak of a floor?
Well that is called foley
and we're here today at Blueprints in Thunder Bay
to learn a little more about the art that
takes a little imagination and some interesting techniques.
This is for things like weapon
handling. So again like somebody's like they pick up
their gun it's got this little dial
You can change the letter of the alphabet, but...
If you're cracking into a safe.
This is another one.
This is a coin counter.
Foley, the art of reproducing
and making sound effects for film, TV shows,
started with radio dramas.
Yeah, just making sounds with weird stuff.
And when we think of making sounds with weird stuff,
what kind of stuff are we talking about?
Well, I mean, there's often times
when you hear something on a TV show where it's very much one-to-one.
Oh, somebody puts a glass down on a table.
It's a glass on a table.
But there's a lot of times when we have
to do something that is exaggerated, hyper-real,
to accentuate and elevate whatever's happening on screen.
So...
Obviously, you know, a solid punch, it's nice to be able to do that.
We have pillows and blankets and things like that we can use.
Something like this, we would do a bit more dramatic.
So, for example, again, the sounds
of a finger breaking, a bone breaking.
Depending on what type of bone,
you might have to break more pieces than one at a time.
You can see that.
Something like that, like, you can imagine that it sounds not just like
a twig, if you were to break a stick or something like that.
It doesn't have the same kind of effect.
It has that fleshiness, that roundness,
as if it's still encased within skin.
You get to use your imagination a lot.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, that's half the fun.
Let's say we were on it to do, like, a squeaky floor kind of situation.
Do you have something for that?
I do.
The different types of rope will make different sounds,
as well as the different tension levels.
What are some of the quintessential scary movie sound effects?
You would expect fire in a lot of horror
or thrillers or psychological films.
You've got your fire.
Just blew my mind.
That's a classic there.
The celery and the lettuce and the produce.
The produce section gets hit hard by post-production facilities.
Again, when we're doing Foley, we have the props,
which we kind of looked at already.
We've got a cloth pass where we just recreate
the sounds of the clothing people are wearing.
But footsteps is such a huge part of it because in a show,
you only, for the most part,
you only really see the top parts of people
as they're talking and having conversations.
But as they're walking around,
a lot of that audio is disregarded or cleaned up before it gets to us.
So we have to put it back in.
See whatever's happening on the screen and try to match it.
So now, just come in and...
So much stuff that I bet you people don't think about at all, right?
Definitely, yeah.
Every sound effect for Foley
is probably three plus layers per sound effect.
Well, guys, I appreciate you letting me come in here.
We're at Blueprints. Thanks again.
Hey, you're very welcome. Thanks for coming in.
Thanks for having us.
