In San Francisco, Mayor Daniel Lurie is pushing for a series
of ballot measures he says will clean up City Hall.
KTVU's Christian Kafton talked with the mayor and has more
on why he says propositions D, E, and F will transform the city.
San Franciscans are just days away from election day.
We'll have to decide 11
issues on the local ballot.
We have a generational opportunity to clean up
City Hall. The business community.
Mayor Daniel Lurie is making a push for
measures D, E and F. Measures he said
are aimed at reforming a dysfunctional
system. D, E and F is going to help change that.
It's going to deliver better
results. It's going to save taxpayer money.
And it's gonna deliver clear lines of accountability.
Proposition D would make it harder
to get issues on the ballot in part by
raising the number of signatures required.
Labor leaders say that move takes power away from the people.
Prop D basically makes San Francisco less democratic. It also allows
Only for big money to put things on the ballot,
it hinders voter participation.
The mayor said the measure would help create clear ballots for voters.
The problem right now in our city
is that elected leaders don't have incentive to
work together to put good things in legislation.
They throw all the divisive misleading ballot
To the voters, instead of getting things done at City Hall.
Measure E would expand the city
administrator's duties and responsibilities
and double the term to 10 years
and would change how city contracts are handled.
And Measure F would give the mayor's
office more control over city departments,
giving the mayor the ability to change staff,
including firing or replacing department heads
that aren't up to the job.
We're going to see clear lines of accountability right now
when everybody is in charge, no one is accountable.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California said
the measure would remove checks and balances
and would impact important departments,
including the police commission.
Quote, under Prop F, the mayor or the rules committee will
be able to unilaterally remove police commissioners
they each nominate without a vote of the full board.
Voters will decide on whether to implement these reforms on Tuesday.
