Day to Day
Oct 31, 2026
All right, fellas, come on up.
All right, Dashie.
Have a seat, lad.
Dash, who's this?
This is my dad, Jason Day.
He plays on the PGA Tour.
Goal!
I don't know, that kind of sums it up.
Yeah.
Day to day.
I'm good.
Jason Day has spent a career planning for what comes next.
I always have to be, you know, five, ten steps ahead
to make sure that we're covered.
I do get nervous at times.
You know, when I retire, what am I going to do?
It's unbelievable to think how fast time goes.
But now, as a husband and father of five,
the future is about providing security
for the family he's building with his wife, Ellie.
We're about the most flexible family
probably you could ever meet.
Like, what else would you say?
The way she is as a mother.
It's amazing to watch how she's grown.
She hates me talking about her like this.
Yep.
I think you're done.
I think...
She's like, get out of here.
Somebody's calling you, I heard.
And who better to help tell their story?
Then Jason and Ellie's firstborn son.
This is my son Dash Day.
He's 14 years old.
It's been great to watch him from obviously a baby to now.
And I've seen him grown from a really tough baby
who didn't want to sleep for two and a half years
to a person that is very mature for his age.
It's fantastic to see.
I see a lot of traits of his mom in him.
Are you?
What's he like as a dad?
Oh gosh I always get this question. He's very um what's the
word? Silly, sarcastic. He is kind of one of the kids.
That's for sure. They find him to be the fun
dad. If people saw me behind the scenes they'd
be like oh my gosh this guy's a kid. We'd be we'd
act the same age which is which is funny.
Last night I hear okay who's on the stand?
When my kids are fighting,
we have this thing where we put them on trial and I'm the judge.
We sit down and talk collectively and say,
hey, this is the reason why you lost
and this is the reason why I think you were in the wrong,
so that they can understand a little bit more
from our perspectives, I guess.
Our goal as parents is to try and raise him with love,
but also try and have him
Be a good citizen and a very responsible person
so that's that's our goal he's doing doing a good
job so far so what am I like as a person?
Very serious. Yeah serious on the course
because like off the course it's just
a little bit different, it's a whole different story.
Jason interview, ABC Common Mark, take one.
ABC Common Mark.
We are very fortunate to have the people that we have in our lives.
I was a little lost as a kid
unfortunately. My dad was really hard, he was he
was an old school guy, he was pretty rough.
And I never got to spend too much time with him.
They worked a lot, same with my mum.
But I see a lot of work ethic,
all the stuff that I see in myself.
Now there's a lot of positives and a lot of negatives in there
because like everyone else, no one's perfect.
And we're just trying to work through our own things.
It's nice, Dash.
So all I would do there is I'd hit the same shot,
but with a slightly open face.
I should throw my hand so I don't get a divot.
It's okay to take a divot.
I know, but like.
There's nothing wrong with taking a divot.
I feel like that's a better technique
and you get a little more spin.
You're not gonna get a lot of spin.
Well, I'm not trying to, I'm just trying to get enough to,
it doesn't roll out crazy.
See?
When did you do that the first time?
Who gives better golf advice, Dashie?
Oh, wow.
Wow.
We just, we love being parents, you know.
For me, you know, being a professional golfer
is all about the memories that we made together.
Obviously, the golf is amazing,
but he's always thinking about the future.
What you do in your family ripples, I think, forever.
I think ultimately, even my golf was based around family.
I didn't want to see you guys grow up without me being there.
To have you guys on the road is a blessing.
It's important for me to plan around that.
I think once you have a skill and a talent and you have a road map,
then you're really unstoppable there.
There's been so many different iterations of Jason Day.
It took him a little bit longer, I think,
to get to where he wanted to be
than he had hoped and expected.
And I would say that there was a lot
of just character building in that time and learning.
After watching you in your interviews,
just seeing people, talking to people,
I've kind of really learned how to, you know,
just socialize with people really well.
So what have you learned from me and my siblings?
I think a lot of patience and finding out what I...
What's supposed to do as a dad?
That's the hardest thing. Golf is a very selfish game,
you have to be very selfish with your time
and for the first time in my life I was thinking of
someone else and for me to learn that,
to learn to be patient but also loving to
manage my tempers,
manage like everything because not every child is the same and you
have to have a different game plan for every child
but you still love them the same you know.
Nothing is perfect and we shouldn't shoot for perfection but it took me
you know a while to kind of find my bearings
and find what I was supposed to do as a father.
Ellie was going through postpartum,
I was going through a rough patch on on the golf course
and it actually took me finally a year,
a year to the day when Dash turned one that I kind of
I felt like I knew what I was doing as a father.
I do remember kind of a shift when I
I would hear him talking about just making sure
that we're all taken care of and I think
that's at the forefront of his mind more than I even realized.
I think the biggest thing for me is building
a home where everyone can come back to because
at some point you're going to have kids.
Hopefully we're going to have a very,
very full house full of grandkids and that's what
mum wants.
It's going to be crazy.
And our job is to plan ahead so that you guys are taken care of.
Anyone that would look at a 38-year-old and go,
yeah, you're still young.
But in athletic terms, in golfing terms,
I'm probably on the back nine somewhere of my career.
And that's okay because the one thing
that you can't beat is father time.
I'm always constantly thinking about my future,
constantly thinking about what I'm going to do in retirement.
I'm constantly thinking about how do I retire?
I need the right people in place to help me along the lines.
And obviously,
I feel like I've done a pretty good job so far of doing that.
You kind of can't believe it
that we're already to this point where we're
looking back on an almost 20-year career.
We did such a good job!
Five kids and just everything.
It is just the most rewarding, sanctifying experience
I think that you could ever go through.
As of right now, I'm definitely focused on moving forward with my golf.
The trophy case that's behind me, it's not filled enough.
But it always, you know,
it's in the back of my mind that I'm always thinking about,
always have to be, you know, five,
ten steps ahead to make sure that we're covered regardless
of what happens. So it's important for me to be able to do that.
Seeing the growth with our family has
been amazing. I wish that I could,
you know, play a video from every season of our life.
It's been amazing, hasn't it?
Oh, no way.
I love you, Dad, and we will believe
that you can win any tournament you play.
All right.
I'm tearing up a little bit.
Oh, he's crying.
I'm trying.
When you look at Dash, what do you see?
When I look at Dash...
Be careful.
Careful.
No, I see a little boy that is growing into a very,
very strong, independent man.
Dash, how about you?
To see dad, you know, it's really all, I mean,
known him since I was zero years old.
Yeah.
He's always been dad, there's really nothing else to say.
That's all I need to be.
