Alive. Look at the link tonight where one Philly HBCU week continued
with the first of two football games being played there this weekend.
This is the 10 o'clock news. I'm Dawn Timoney.
The Lincoln University Lions taking
on the Virginia Union University Panthers are Brittany.
We're there for the game and Brittany tonight was about
so much more than just football.
That's right, Dawn. From the step show to the football field,
there was no shortage of scholastic pride here at the Link tonight.
Now, one Philly HBCU week, it brought the energy, the culture,
and the competition with a football game that just ended here
between Lincoln University and Virginia Union University.
Virginia did win that matchup here tonight, but there was also a little
bit of star power with we had Ludacris performing the halftime show.
It's a halftime show, but beyond the music and the competition,
the day was really just
about celebrating history and culture
and the opportunities at HBCUs.
The rhythm, the precision, the energy, all on full display.
Students and alumni brought their best moves to the HBCU Collegiate
and Alumni Step Show.
Hosted by Fox 29's own Alex Hawley.
It has been great.
We have 12 teams that have been performing,
and this is Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated.
It's been wonderful to see.
And the pride extended all the way to City Hall.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, a proud Lincoln University alumni,
was also there to take part in the celebration.
I love you!
Philadelphia Schools Superintendent Tony Wallington
was among the judges.
It makes me think about how important
our historically black colleges and universities are
to the education of our young people,
the tremendous opportunities that they provide our young people.
Watching a tradition rooted in culture and history.
It kind of symbolizes African traditions
and just ways for us to communicate
and showcase kind of like entertainment, history all together.
The Epsilon chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi
from Lincoln University took home the win.
And for Superintendent Wellington,
it was also about showing young people the possibilities
that come with an HBCU education.
Representation matters.
And for some of the high school students there,
it was a chance to get a closer look at the
opportunities and traditions that come with attending an HBCU.
I like football.
I've been recruited by Lincoln as well, so it's a great experience.
Friday night, the celebration moved to the football field,
where Lincoln University faced Virginia Union University.
Thank you.
And then Ludacris took the stage for a special halftime show.
In the end, the Virginia Panthers are the ones
who walked away with a win.
And that HBCU football action continues here tomorrow afternoon
at three with Delaware State versus Norfolk State.
And we've got two big names in Philadelphia football coaching
those teams. We've got Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson.
So just another opportunity to keep that celebration continuing here
for HBCU week in Philadelphia. Live from Lincoln University, we are Fox 29 News.
