The streets of Dar es Salaam,
swarming with heavily armed security forces,
as Tanzania marks a year since a bloody post-electoral massacre.
Today, many remain traumatized by the violence,
like 22-year-old Azma, who saw a man get killed right before her eyes.
We say it's the people who are...
He was standing on the street
when a car appeared with several people inside.
I told him to run, but as he was trying to get away,
he was shot in the neck.
Wap wap wap wap wap.
On October 29, 2025,
Samia Suluhu Hassan was elected president with 98% of votes
in an election where her main challengers had been barred from running.
This triggered days of widespread protests across Tanzania
that were brutally repressed by security forces.
At least 500 people were killed,
according to authorities,
while rights groups say thousands lost their lives in the violence.
There were no official commemoration events on Thursday,
yet several churches held memorial
services to honour the victims and pray for reconciliation.
Sometimes it can be good for both sides to be patient,
for us citizens and for the government
as well.
We should sit down and talk
so that what happened on October 29th does not happen again.
I'm going to go to Yuma.
Tanzanian authorities have
so far refused to acknowledge any mistakes or abuses
in their handling of the post-electoral crisis.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people,
including opposition leader Tundu Lissu and other government critics,
are currently facing trial for treason or terrorism-related charges.
