The crash site 48 hours after that accident
is still a very much an active situation. There are
still many of the police officers, the forensic scientists there.
They're using drone technology
and thermal cameras to try to identify any parts
of human bodies that may remain at that site.
And many of the autopsies are now beginning.
We've had about 40...
Forty autopsies are carried out, but there are as many
as 60 families looking for loved ones, looking for news of loved ones.
Some of them are desperately hoping, against the odds now,
that they might find news of their loved ones
in the intensive care wards or somewhere safe.
But the news is already very sad and very grim.
For many of those families,
and we're getting the first names of some of the victims coming out.
Some of them are well known in Spain.
For instance, the former Labour minister,
the conservative Fatima Baniet, was one of the victims at 59 years old.
A young athlete, a 24-year-old athlete, Julieta Gallega,
one of the train drivers, didn't survive that accident.
He was only 36.
A young 31-year-old police officer, the list, unfortunately,
of those lives cut short will continue over the next day
or two as the police tell people and in person, and they're stressing
that there are some fraudulent messages going around,
but they would always tell the families face to face.
There are 23 foreigners, we understand.
Among the victims, because, of course,
that train line goes down to Seville and many people go down
to Andalusia and between Madrid at all times of the year.
