Big changes are coming to a common way
of getting prescription drugs starting in January.
It will be more difficult and more expensive to get
your overseas pharmacy to send you your prescription in the U.S.
Fox's Jared Halpert explains why.
This is something that could potentially
be leading to a healthcare crisis.
If you buy prescription drugs from overseas,
you could soon be paying a lot more.
President Trump has quietly signed a 90-day pause
on a new US customs policy that will
make it significantly more expensive and more difficult.
According to the new rule,
which was originally scheduled to take effect this week, shipments
valued at less than $800 are no longer eligible
for duty-free exemptions.
It means if you get your drugs from Canada,
they'll be more expensive and you'll have
to jump through more hoops to get them in the US.
Advocates say that's going to create a cash crunch
for Americans that buy drugs overseas.
Many of the people that do buy their drugs,
like 4 million per year from other countries-
You usually have no other option.
But President Trump says American citizens don't need
to buy their drugs from Canadian
pharmacies because his administration has lowered prices
at an unprecedented rate.
We've achieved the largest drug price reduction
in history with price differences of 300,
400, 500, and even 600.
Can you imagine that?
But advocates point out more than 350
brand-name drugs saw price increases this year,
and those trends are expected to continue.
There really won't be much alternative
for at least 4 million Americans.
Overall, prescription drug prices are down 3% from a year ago.
That is the sharpest single-year drop in more than 60 years.
