The owners of Crown Jewelry in Lakewood are tallying up
the cost to recover after a smash-and-grab takeover robbery.
Their glass cases are all shattered and empty now.
The owners tell us they buzzed a woman in yesterday,
and then she held the door open as three men in white jumpsuits
and masks rushed in and started breaking the glass.
One was armed with a rifle, two others with axes.
They cleaned out the jewelry and were gone in about a minute.
Lakewood police responded after 911 calls from people
who thought they heard gunfire.
They were locked into the store
and so they broke a window right next to the front door to
get back out. That noise
is what we believe everybody thought was shots fired
because there were no shots that got fired. It was the window.
Sergeant Porsche says they welcome any tips
or leads if someone shows up with a large amount of loose jewelry.
The store does have surveillance video of the crime
and the getaway vehicle, but police asked them not to share it with us
while they investigate the case.
