Southeast Manitoba sees political change, same result on cannabis sales
Oct 29, 2026
Political change is coming to Southeast Manitoba.
Steinbach has elected two new councillors,
one of whom just made history.
Greg Carlos is the first Filipino-Canadian to run
and win a seat on Steinbach Council.
We're contributing so many things in different sectors,
like in the medical field, in the agri-industry,
and different kinds of sectors.
And it's time to have a voice, to have a voice here in Steinbach.
As a Filipino, as a minority group.
Further west, big changes are coming to Morden City Hall.
Voters elected new candidates to the majority
of council seats and a new mayor.
Ernie Epp gained more than 60% of the vote,
defeating incumbent Nancy Penner.
I appreciate that the community wanted to change.
And, uh...
I will certainly work hard to ensure
that they don't feel as though they have been let down.
In Morden's sister city, Winkler,
voters gave a definitive no to retail cannabis.
Jesse Lavoie of Toba Grown led the effort
to gather over 2,300 signatures in Winkler
to force the plebiscite.
We knew this was going to be a tough, even if we got it to the polls,
it would be a very tough thing to get across.
But if no one makes noise about it ever, things just stay status quo.
80% of voters were against it.
That's more than the 70% who voted no in 2018
when cannabis was federally legalized.
