Remedios Varo was a Mexican painter of Spanish origin. She was born in Anglès, Girona, in Spain. She was part of the generation of Spanish refugees in Mexico in the middle 20th Century and, after Frida Kahlo, she is currently the most recognized female Mexican painter among the Mexican people.
Remedios’ mother, Ignacia Uranga y Begareche, is often described as the typical Basque woman; in other words, a woman of strong character and dedicated to the activities that were considered proper of women at that time. Rodrigo Varo, father of Remedios, was a specialist in Esperanto language. He taught his daughter technical drawing. Remedios was encouraged by her family into Art because of her ability with oil painting. Mr. Varo used to take her to museums. He was the Business Supervisor of His Majesty the King of Spain in Morocco. Because of this, the family had to live in Tangier when Remedios was a child. In this city Judaism, Christianity and Islam lived together, those were a greater influence in the artist’s work.
