At least 64 people have
been killed after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain.
The trains crashed just outside Toledo
on the line connecting Madrid to Seville
in the southern Andalusia region.
Footage shows wreckage scattered across an embankment.
Rail services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended.
A crash on the same line in January killed 46 people.
Graham Keeley is a journalist and writer covering Spain.
He says safety checks on high-speed railway lines may
not have been completed
by the time of the crash.
This comes at an awful time for the present government because we have
an election here in Spain in just over a month.
After the crash in January, the government promised
to conduct checks on all the lines all over the country.
And what happened was trains were
slowed down on major high speed routes
however it appears that these checks had not been completed
by the time of this crash i should say
that so far indications suggest that today's crash was
due to human error
although that's not the findings of any official inquiry this happened
in a rural area near to two small towns just south of Toledo
which is quite a
small city which is popular with tourists the people
on these trains were commuters going down
for going from Madrid to Seville
and a number of tourists americans people from the Philippines
and other countries going to see Seville
which is a very popular city with tourists
