New York and around the world,
from the stage to the big screen, the worldwide phenomenon
returns. The original,
record-breaking production returns to Washington, D.C., Mamma Mia.
Celebrate the 25th anniversary
of the most exhilarating smash hit musical ever.
Fall in love all over again with Mamma Mia.
To New York and around the world.
Oh my goodness, that just took me back.
ABBA's biggest hits, a heartwarming story,
and a whole lot of fun.
That is what you can expect
from the hit musical Mamma Mia
taking stage at the National Theater.
We're talking with two of the stars here
live in studio with This Morning.
Welcome Kayla Ryan Walsh and Leland Burnett.
Glad to have you both here with us this morning.
Welcome to Good Day DC.
Thank you.
So talk to us a little bit about
what people can expect
when the curtain goes up
for Mamma Mia at the National Theater.
A whole lot of joy,
a whole lot of fun hijinks.
It is the story of a mother and daughter.
It is the eve of Sophie's wedding,
and she is desperately trying to find out who her father is.
And there's some wonderful musical
hijinks set to the tone of ABBA music.
Yes, of course. Talk to me a little bit about
your character, Leland, who you play.
I play Bill Austin. He's one of the potential fathers.
He's a rough-and-tumble adventure journalist,
so a little bit like yourself, I guess, right?
All right, there you go. We like that.
Yeah, and he brings a lot of the comedy elements to the show
and a bit of sexiness at times with my co-star here.
Wow, okay.
Kayla, tell us a little bit about your character then.
Yeah, so Rosie is the best friend of Donna, the mother of the show.
And so we were part of this girl group called the Dynamos,
and so it's a lot of rough-and-tumble comedy elements
between the three friends especially,
and some romance smattered in here and there,
and it's just a blast from start to finish.
What made both of you interested in taking part in this Broadway
musical, Mamma Mia, here and bringing it here to the National Theater?
I've been chasing this show for a minute.
I think Leland has been, too.
Okay.
So it's just such a joy bomb.
And the fact now that we get to do it and we get to share
at the National is such a special full circle moment.
It was the first National tour I ever saw.
Oh, wow.
So it feels very cool to be part of this narrative now.
What about for you, Leland?
It's one of those shows that as much fun as we're having on stage,
the audience is also enjoying that energy as well.
So it feels like a two and a half hour vacation for all of us
to just get away, enjoy some of the best music from the last 50 years,
and have a dance party.
Is there a favorite song that you all prefer to perform out of the,
I mean, there's a lot of fantastic songs as part of Mamma Mia,
but do you have a favorite?
My favorite is the, one of the few numbers I'm
not in is Money, Money, Money.
Okay.
It's right at the top of the show, and for me, it just locks it in.
It's such a jam.
All right, petition to get Leland in the top of the show.
What about for you, Kayla?
I love Super Trooper.
It's such a blast, and it's a crowd favorite.
You feel everyone singing along
and get their lighters out for a little nice slow moment.
Cell phones.
Cell phones, yeah.
Don't bring a lighter.
No lighter, no lighter.
Please don't do that.
So, I don't know about for you guys, but for me,
Mamma Mia really takes me back to just the family.
My family experienced myself watching Mamma Mia
with my mom, with my sister.
What about for you seeing the families that perhaps come to the show
and seeing them experience this,
just the love, the joy, the fun
that is happening up on stage because of you all?
It's intergenerational.
The biggest thing that surprised me
when I joined the company was at the stage door after the show,
seeing the faces that come in to meet us.
It's not just people that were around
when the music came out all those years ago.
It's their kids and their grandkids.
So you get multi-generational families that are coming in,
and it seems that the younger kids are just as hyped about it
as the people who were there when these
songs came out all these years ago.
Yeah, exactly.
For you guys, how long are you here with the National Theater?
Yeah, so we're here until November 15th.
So we opened last night.
We're ready to rock and roll, and we'd love
to have everyone come and join us at the National.
Wow, just hit the ground running.
Sounds fun.
Awesome.
Thank you, guys.
That's where you can find more information about Broadway
at the National Theater in D.C.
If you're interested in heading out
to Mamma Mia!, like you said, November 15th.
So you've got some time, maybe a great option
if you're looking for something to do in the
next couple of weeks.
Makia, I'll send it to you.
All right.
I love it.
