Replacing a rheem coil on one of the old short stack air handlers
#hvac

This morning, we are, nice attic space,
not the greatest access right here, but we are
changing this evaporator core.
So I'm fixing to get started on that.
I've got it recovering outside, I'm fixing to cut this loose.
Alright, this has been replaced before.
This drain goes in the bottom.
If it's at all possible to save this elbow and reuse it,
that's what you should do because
they don't make those elbows anymore
the the threaded part is longer than a normal
threaded elbow but they do make
these little straight adapters
that you can use but it looks
like with this i just need
to move that board down there
and i can unscrew it you can see on this
coil where it was leaking see all
the that oil right there up here it was leaking i also found
leaks down here but um it's a 21 year old system
but they still decided to replace the hole so
that's what
we're going to
do i'm going to
convert this
to um r422b
instead
of r22
these are the
adapters that they send with these coils
for the drain they don't make those elbows with the long
neck on them anymore so you have to use one of these and cut it off
and put an elbow on it
If
you
can't
save
the
elbow
that's
in
there
get
up
without
bumping
this
Time
to
pressure
test
it
all right
we got
about 200
psi on it
let's see
i think
we're good
that
accumulator
this
thing
had very little freon left in it if y'all saw
that leak it was leaking bad there's still freon
in the accumulator all right now
i'm gonna try to hook up this drain
once again you're not going
find this elbow
anywhere
so try to reuse it
if you can it was
getting tight
so i'm gonna leave
that there i'm
gonna leave
that like that i'm
not gonna glue
it i much prefer
the ones that
had the drains that came
out right here along
the bottom that's not what
i got see if we can't tape
that up
a little
bit other
than that
little bit
of tape
right
there we're
done up
here i
seem to
have leveled off right around 9 50. this right here
is kind of cool to the touch and so is the
accumulator so that tells me i'm boiling off some freon in the line set
and in the accumulator there's
probably oil trapped freon there
so all i can do right now is wait unless i'm going to heat that
up and i don't really want to do that all right i valved this off
and it's held right there for like
20 minutes so um i'm fixing to charge
this thing up all right what i didn't show at the end of that
last video was the problems i was having
with my vacuum pump now i've had that same vacuum
pump for 11 years and recently it's been taking
a long time to pull down into a deep vacuum
and today a system like that a four ton system
when that vacuum pump was new would take me about
five minutes but today it would not pull down
below like 750 microns and i know i had a tight
system because i could valve it off and it would hold
but it just would not go any lower and i
waited like an hour 15 hour
and 20 minutes all the oil trapped freon had long since been gone
and i couldn't get it any lower so today i bought
a field piece vp85 it came highly recommended
but having to wait hours
and hours for a system to pull down just especially when you know you
got a tight system it's frustrating
and um 11 years is long enough for a vacuum pump i sent it
off to have it rebuilt and i'll use it
as a backup i'll keep it at my shop but on the next job where
i have to open up a system we'll be trying out this new vacuum pump
and i'll do a review on it
for you but you know how it does
