But we start tonight in Cobb County where a mother
is charged after leaving her six-month-old
baby with strangers at a Jiffy Lube.
Thank you for joining us at 10. I'm Russ Spencer.
I'm Courtney Bryant. Employees say
the mother told them they could have the baby.
Fox 5's Denise Dillon is live in Cobb County tonight.
Denise, you talked to one of those
employees. I did and she's a mom herself.
She said that when this complete stranger just handed
over her baby. She didn't know what to think
but she knew she had to keep that baby safe. The day
was just getting started for assistant manager Jerea Mays
at the Jiffy Lube on Floyd Road Saturday
morning when a woman walked over pushing a stroller with a baby.
It was a woman she had never met but
had seen walking down the street by the business.
She came up to me and my co-worker Elijah with a
stroller and she was like, hey, doesn't my baby look so cute?
Isn't my baby so cute? We were like,
yeah, baby's adorable and she was.
She was absolutely adorable. The woman said she had
something to do and needed them to watch the six-month-old baby girl.
She just kept saying
the paperwork is in the back.
You guys can just have her if I don't make it back. Once she said
that, red flags immediately. The woman left.
Jerea immediately called 911 and took a closer look at
the baby whose diaper was soaked. She had a rash on her neck.
She had a bad diaper rash. About 15
minutes later, while Jerea was still talking to 9-1-1,
the mother came back. Jerea says she had
a knife in her hand and was asking for the baby.
Where's the baby? I need the baby. I gotta go. I
gotta go. Some stuff just went down. I gotta go.
The 9-1-1 operator could hear the woman. 9-1-1
most definitely said do not let her leave with the baby.
Police pulled up. The mom, 35-year-old
LaRaven Davis was arrested on charges of child abandonment
and reckless conduct.
She was taken to jail.
The baby was rushed to the hospital to be checked out.
As a mom, it broke me down. I did cry a lot.
Jerea says many have told her she's a hero
and may have saved that baby's life.
I was just a mom looking out for another kid.
I just, I couldn't let that baby go like that.
That was heartbreaking.
Jerea told me that she and her coworker
Elijah often think about the baby and hope she's doing well.
Reporting live in Cobb County, Denise Dillon in Fox 5 News. Wow.
Well, just as she said, I mean, I'm the mom of a five month old baby
and that just hits really close to home. I'm so grateful she was there
and was able to do the right thing. Denise, thanks.
