A follow up now. You will only see this story right here on Fox 35.
A manatee mangled by a crab trap will survive thanks to SeaWorld.
The vet team there and FWC saving the sea cow after a couple found it
in Titusville. We first showed you the rescue last month
and now we're seeing how she's healing up.
Here's Esther Bauer with the update.
We're in the Manatee Rescue Center here behind the scenes at SeaWorld
and that's because we are getting a look at a struggling
manatee that is now living her best life.
South Paul was found with a crab trap around one of her
fins, but she is going to survive thanks to a community that cared.
If it doesn't look right,
doesn't look normal to you, then question it.
Those questions saved this manatee's life. She
was trapped and tangled in a crab trap
that wouldn't come off in the Indian River Lagoon.
And they were able to remove that line.
Removing the line also meant vets had to remove her right
flipper because it couldn't be saved but it's not holding her back.
Even with her one peck she's
still able to move around her habitat.
She's able to go down deep, come up to the surface, do all
normal manatee movements. Terry Morse got to see
those movements on Wednesday. SeaWorld invited her
to the park to see the sea cow she saved.
I feel very honored to be a part of her, just a little
part of her journey back to a second chance.
Terry says anyone can save an animal in distress. They
They just have to be observant and alert the right rescuers.
I took pictures and videos and I contacted FWC.
The FWC brought the sea cow to SeaWorld where she
is spending time with other manatees who also need some help.
This year alone, SeaWorld has rescued
and worked to rehabilitate more than 30 manatees.
We do really rely on the community.
Vets are still monitoring this manatee closely
to make sure she gains weight and her flipper heals up.
But she's part of the family now.
It is a cute name.
SeaWorld naming her Southpaw to showcase her strong side left
handed person for like stance for different sports and still
no exact timeline for when Southpaw will head back to the wild.
But she is looking like she will have the strength
and will make a full recovery to do that.
