AI GeneratedA Florida Highway Patrol trooper was seriously injured after a driver crashed into his patrol car in an active construction zone on State Road 429. The incident has prompted officials to reiterate the critical importance of Florida's \"Move Over\" law to protect first responders and roadside workers.
Right now at six, a trooper seriously hurt after
a driver crashed into his patrol car
in an active construction zone.
FHP says the trooper's emergency lights were flashing,
but the driver did not move over. Welcome in at six. I'm Jack Royer.
Good evening, everybody. I'm Luanne Sorrell.
Alexis Clevenger is joining us live tonight.
So Alexis, officials are stressing
the importance of Florida's move over law.
Yeah, Luanne, Jack, that law is designed
to protect those first responders,
roadside workers and other drivers
so if you don't follow it there are consequences the damage shows
just how hard the impact was the Florida Highway Patrol says
a driver slammed into the back of a
trooper's patrol car that trooper was stopped
in an active construction zone with his emergency
lights flashing on State Road 429 investigators say
the 53 year old driver from Davenport was
taken to the hospital and the trooper was airlifted
to the hospital now crashes like this are not
uncommon. In 2025, there were 215 crashes
in the state involving drivers who failed to move over.
More than 17,300 citations were issued.
According to a new study from AAA, about 90% of drivers
claim they follow the law.
But research shows only 64% actually change lanes
or reduce their speed.
Please give others the same space protection
that you would want in that situation.
And remember that it only takes one distractor,
a careless driver, to turn a roadside stop into a tragedy.
Law enforcement officials continue to urge drivers to move over
or slow down when they approach emergency vehicles.
Just last week, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey posted his own
warning after one of his deputies was nearly hit by a speeding driver.
Not only is it a violation of the law to not move over
or at least slow down 20 miles an hour below the speed limit,
but unfortunately, some people don't understand the move over law.
they don't understand the common sense of move over.
Now this crash is still under investigation
and FHP says charges are pending as well.
