Jay Barry and Nebraska Game
Oct 28, 2026
It was, you know, it was a lot of red.
It was a lot of red.
It was, coming into the stadium was real scary
because there was so much red.
I had to close my eyes.
It was a night game.
And there really wasn't many night games back then.
So the stadium was, you know, it was super crowded.
It was so loud when we were on offense
that you couldn't hear,
you couldn't hear anything from the sidelines.
No coaches screaming, nothing.
You couldn't even hear the quarterback.
You had to really look at Billy Joe's mouth
to see what kind of play he was calling.
So, I mean, it was a tough game.
I remember it was a tough game.
Nebraska hit.
They were hitting really hard.
It was a good old-fashioned football game.
You know, I covered a lot of sports.
Like, I covered the Mariners and Griffey and A-Rod and Randy Johnson
and a bunch of other things and met a lot of famous people.
But that Nebraska game is probably
my favorite moment in my 35-year sports
riding career because it was just a huge, huge game.
The fans were really cool because they
gave you a standing ovation when you
left, and they weren't your fans.
And then you guys fourth quartered a great team on the road.
And that was probably – well, the Cal game was tough,
but the Nebraska game kind of was the whole pivot to that season
because you guys were losing, and you just fourth quartered them.
So so when you'd scored on the touchdown, what can you replay on it?
Where did you go? What side?
Guard tackle. Where'd you go? I mean, it was a draw.
So the slow developing play and
It just it just opened up
and I just took it on down the sidelines and I was gone
Yeah, were you surprised that you had so much wide open space?
I mean that that line is uh and our tight ends
and everything we're a good team
So they open them up.
You just got to rip and get on through it and get down there. Yeah, I
And in 30 years, what kind of reaction have you had to go on 80 yards
for a touchdown at Nebraska?
Because, like I said, that's really rare.
I mean, people still recognize it,
especially from the people from Nebraska.
Since I'm from Colorado, you know, Nebraska is a big rivalry.
So that doesn't happen much in Nebraska.
And me living in Colorado, it still comes up a lot.
And the way I took off my helmet
at the end made it all a big difference
in the world also.
Yeah.
No, I remember you in the end zone.
You can't celebrate like that.
You're not supposed to celebrate like that no more.
Oh, I know.
I know.
There's no more Compton Shake, right?
No more Compton Shake.
