These two plants are the same age.
I bought them on the same day at the same store.
Yet, for eight months, this plant hasn't produced a single new shoot,
while the one next to it has given me many healthy green shoots.
The same light, the same amount of water, the same fertilizing routine.
So what makes the difference?
A bigger pot doesn't mean better.
Sometimes an oversized pot is exactly why a plant never grows.
Before touching anything,
look at the calendar.
ZZ plants grow in flushes during spring
and summer then slow down or stop completely from
October to February it's not a sick plant it's
a plant doing exactly what it's supposed to do
but if your plant still isn't growing throughout spring
and summer then something is definitely
wrong and this video is for you
here's something few people realize
beneath the soil a ZZ plant
has not only roots but also swollen rhizomes
that store water and nutrients these are the
plump white rhizomes that look like little potatoes.
Each rhizome is a water reservoir.
The plant fills them during the rainy season
and lives off them during the dry season. In the wild,
it can survive for months without a single drop of rain.
And here's the part that changes everything.
New shoots don't grow from the stems.
They grow from these rhizomes.
If the rhizomes aren't
healthy, you'll never get new shoots,
no matter how much fertilizer you pour on top. A ZZ plant
that stops growing often has a problem with its rhizomes,
especially when they're buried
in overly
wet soil.
Three ways to tell if your pot is too big.
Test 1.
Push your finger into the soil as deep
as possible 10 days after the last watering.
If the soil is still damp at the bottom,
excess water is surrounding the rhizomes day and
night.
Test 2.
Lift the plant out.
If the gap between the rhizomes
and the pot wall is wider than two fingers, the pot is
too
big.
ZZ plants prefer a slightly snug pot
with a maximum gap of about two fingers.
Test 3. Observe the soil ball you just removed.
If the roots hold the soil together in one intact
mass, the pot is the right size.
If the soil falls apart
with no roots running through it,
it's just holding excess moisture. Gently rinse
the soil away under running water to get a clear
view of the rhizomes.
Healthy rhizomes are firm, plump, and off-white.
When squeezed,
it springs back like a fresh potato.
Remove the rotten parts of the rhizomes until only healthy
white tissue remains to prevent the rot
from spreading to other rhizomes. Sprinkle cinnamon
powder on the cut surfaces,
then leave the plant out of its pot in the shade for one day to let
the cuts dry. Placing a freshly cut rhizome directly
into wet soil creates a new breeding
ground for rot.
Choose a new pot only about two fingers wider than
the cluster of rhizomes.
It's okay if it looks a little small, because that's the right size.
As for the growing medium, don't use regular potting soil alone.
It retains too much water.
Mix soil with pine bark in a 1-to-1 ratio to create a loose,
well-draining growing medium.
The growing medium must drain very well,
allowing water to flow through quickly without pooling.
Gently fill in around the rhizomes,
leaving their tops exposed.
Burying them too deeply can cause rot.
The cuts haven't healed yet,
and the rhizomes already have enough stored water.
Watering now could cause the rhizomes to rot again.
If the pot is the right size, but the plant still isn't growing.
ZZ plants tolerate low light,
but they need enough light to produce new shoots.
Move it closer to a window.
Watering don't water on a schedule.
Fertilizer, only fertilize in spring and summer.
Dilute to half strength, and apply when the soil is already moist.
I won't ask you to take
my word for it.
So here's an experiment.
Plant A has just been repotted
into a pot exactly two fingers wider than the rhizome cluster,
using a coarse growing medium.
Plant B stays as it is in the large pot,
and I'll continue watering it the way most people do.
After 30 days, I'll count again and reveal the real results.
But ZZ plants grow slowly in October,
so the changes may not be clearly visible yet.
Tell me in the comments how big your ZZ plants pot is
and how long it's been since you last saw a new shoot.
Remember this, a ZZ plant stops growing not because it lacks something,
but because it receives more than it needs.
Try measuring the space around the rhizomes with two fingers.
If there's extra room, you've found the cause.
And come back in a month to see the results.
Honestly, I don't know which plant will win.
