Someone had thrown this orchid away because it had lost most of its roots and its leaves were turning yellow. When I found it, I decided to bring it home and give it another chance. Instead of letting this beautiful plant go to waste, I wanted to restore its health and add it to my orchid collection in the garden.
In this video, I'll show you step by step how I cared for this struggling orchid using a homemade solution prepared with onion skins, rice, and vitamin B1. You'll see how I treated the damaged plant, cared for its remaining roots, and repotted it to support its recovery.
Orchids with severe root damage can be challenging to save, but with patience, proper care, and suitable growing conditions, even a discarded orchid may have a second chance at life. Follow along to see the results after three months and discover why I believe every struggling orchid deserves a chance to grow again.

This video demonstrates the successful recovery of a severely damaged Phalaenopsis orchid that had lost its leaves, crown, and most of its root system. By using a specialized organic mixture of onion skins, white rice, and Vitamin B1, the creator transforms a nearly lifeless plant into a healthy orchid with a new keiki and a robust root system over a three-month period.
This Phalaenopsis orchid has almost lost all signs
of life with all its leaves gone and its crown
missing. The root system is dry, brittle, easily broken,
and severely damaged. But I still decided
to save the plant using a special method with familiar ingredients.
I combine onion, white rice,
and vitamin b1 in one formula.
And after just three months the orchid has undergone an astonishing
transformation.
Join me as we follow the entire recovery process.
Look at how serious the condition
of this Phalaenopsis orchid has become.
The plant has lost all its leaves,
its crown is gone,
and its roots are dry, shriveled,
and exposed outside the growing medium.
When gently squeezed
by hand, the dry roots crackle
because they have become hollow inside and lost their strength.
In this condition, the orchid needs to be carefully
examined before beginning the recovery
process.
I gently lift the orchid out of
the pot to inspect the entire
root system underneath.
remove the old growing medium still clinging to the roots
so i can clearly examine the condition
of each root section
the growing medium is so dry
and hard that even
when i squeeze it firmly i
cannot get out even
a single drop of water
after inspection i cut away
the roots that are dry and
hollow brittle and broken
or severely damaged removing
the damaged roots helps me assess the
remaining roots and prepare for the recovery
process however i do not cut off roots just
because they are brown or dark in color.
Root sections that are still firm and show no signs
of rot should
be kept whenever possible.
Next, I gently rinse
the root system with clean water to
remove dirt, growing medium residue,
and any remaining debris.
I place the plant in water
in a cup and add soaking water to give
the remaining living tissues a chance to absorb
more moisture.
Soak for about
15 minutes.
After 15 minutes,
lift the plant out
and let it air dry
naturally.
Now I will prepare the mixture
for caring for this orchid.
The first ingredient is
a fresh onion.
I peel off the entire outer
layer to use the onion.
Onion skins contain natural
antioxidant compounds. I use these skins
to experiment with a care solution for the weakened
orchid. Cut the onion into small pieces
to make it easier to extract
the soluble compounds into
the water.
Add one liter
of boiling water to it.
Then I add five
tablespoons
of white rice to the
jar and stir well to allow the ingredients to come
into contact with each other. Rice contains
starch along with small amounts of vitamins and minerals,
helping create the organic mixture that
I want to test for caring for the orchid.
Stir well
and let the mixture sit until it is cooled
completely.
After the mixture is cooled,
I use a strainer to remove
the onion pieces,
rice grains,
and any remaining
residue.
I add one liter
of clean water to
dilute the mixture.
Finally, I add
three vitamin B1 tablets
and stir well until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined.
Vitamin B1 plays a role
in the plant's energy metabolism.
Stir well until the mixture is
uniform.
Now, I gently pour the
prepared mixture over
the remaining roots
of the orchid. I soak
it for about 15 minutes to allow the roots to come
into contact with the mixture. During this time,
I use a soft cotton pad to absorb a small amount of the mixture
and gently wipe the surface of
remaining leaves. This helps clean the leaves
and makes it easier to monitor the plant's condition.
After soaking
for 15 minutes,
I remove the plant from
the mixture and pat it dry.
Pay special
attention to areas where
moisture can easily accumulate.
After the treatment, I prepare a pot
with plenty of drainage holes
to prevent water from accumulating
around the root system. The
growing medium I use in the initial stage is prepared moss.
First, I place a thin layer of
moss at the bottom of the pot next i place
the orchid in the center of the pot and adjust
just its position so that the stem stands firmly
without leaning or falling over add more moss
around the remaining roots to keep
the plant stable after planting i use a spray bottle to
create a light mist over the surface of the moss
do not let the moss become waterlogged or allow
water to accumulate around the plant's stem finally place
the plant in a spot with indirect
light away from direct sunlight
after one week the plant has had time
to settle into its new pot
i begin watering the plant with clean water water
just enough then allow all excess water to drain
out i do not let the bottom of the pot sit in water
because the remaining roots need both
moisture and air to remain active
at this stage i prioritize helping the plant stabilize and avoiding
further damage so i do not apply fertilizer
and this is the change i
observed after 40 days of
care take a close look at the base of the plant
a fresh green orchid keiki has begun to emerge
bringing new hope for this orchid that was once
in a very weak condition not only that several
green root tips are also growing from the remaining stem
at this stage i prioritize helping
the plant stabilize and preventing further damage
seeing this orchid once bare rooted and completely
leafless now producing a keiki and new roots
makes me incredibly happy when the plant begins
developing new roots and a keiki i move it
to a larger pot to give it more room to grow. I choose
pine bark as the growing medium.
I gently remove the plant
from the old pot trying to preserve the
developing young roots. Then I place the plant in the new pot
and gradually add pine bark around the
root system. Pine bark of a suitable size helps create air spaces
that allow air to circulate
around the roots while
also helping water drain
away more easily. Now I
will continue using the
rice and onion skin mixture prepared earlier
as part of the care process. Use only a moderate
amount, making sure the organic mixture does not remain on the stem
or accumulate excessively in
the growing medium. For the rice and onion skin mixture mixture,
I use it no more than twice a
month, alternating with regular watering using clean water.
In addition, I maintain indirect
light and good air circulation while monitoring
the development of new roots. And this is the
result after three months of care.
It is wonderful to see that the orchid keiki has grown much
greener and healthier. The new leaves look fresh,
vibrant green, and larger than they were in the
initial stage. In particular, the young roots have grown longer,
look stronger, and have many root
tips that are continuing to develop.
These are positive signs that the plant is still alive and
has made progress during the care process.
I am very happy to witness this transformation.
I hope this recovery process will help you gain more experience
in caring for weakened orchids.
