China is buying gold at a remarkable pace.

During the first eight months of 2026, China imported more than 1,000 tonnes of gold, worth around $159 billion, while its reported holdings of US Treasury debt have fallen to their lowest level in years.

In this video, I look at why Chinese households, investors and institutions are turning towards gold, how the price has moved over the last 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 years, and why gold is increasingly being viewed as a store of value in an uncertain global economy.

I also examine what this could mean for the US dollar, Treasury markets and the wider financial system, as China continues to diversify away from traditional assets.

And there is a slightly unusual twist — including the viral story of a Chinese recycler extracting gold from electronic waste and SIM-card material.
