Brazil: Flavio Bolsonaro leaves Argentina for alleged US asylum after defeat

The Bolsonaro political family have always presented themselves as patriots. The question is, of which country? As, repeating the actions of Father Jair four years ago, Flávio Bolsonaro responds to election defeat by fleeing to the United States, where President Trump is granting him a visa. The Bolsonaro campaign is under investigation for allegedly accepting foreign, i.e. US funds. It's illegal in Brazil. And in a public life where the smoke of scandal has never been far away, Flavio also faces far more serious corruption investigations into his involvement in a massive money laundering scheme. At the moment, though, he hasn't even been charged. So the demand of the Supreme Court that he hand over his passport, which appears to have provoked this flight, could come across as heavy-handed, although fears that he might be a flight risk have certainly been confirmed. Some might see Bolsonaro's actions as an admission of guilt. It hands the moral ground to re-elected President Lula, who accepted a highly controversial verdict which jailed him nearly a decade ago. And some of Bolsonaro's voters will surely feel abandoned. The day after the elections, Flávio firmly stated his objective to hand over his passport, to stay in Brazil, to lead the opposition. Promises utterly broken in less than 24 hours.
