Where in the world is Flavio Bolsonaro?
The defeated far-right presidential candidate
has left Brazil despite a court order banning
him from exiting the country.
Argentine authorities this Wednesday said he boarded
a flight from Argentina to Ecuador.
Meanwhile, sources at the U.S. State Department
have said Bolsonaro and his family will receive
entry visas for the United States.
The son of jailed ex-leader Jair Bolsonaro has refused
to concede defeat since losing
Sunday's vote and is currently under investigation
in Brazil for corruption and money laundering.
Earlier, we spoke to our Washington,
D.C. correspondent, Fraser Jackson.
A senior State Department official has confirmed
to me that the U.S. will be welcoming defeated
Brazilian presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro.
In a short statement, the official said the State
Department will issue visas to Flavio Bolsonaro
and his family and allow them entry into the
United States. While high profile figures seeking to flee their country
and come to the U.S. often
enter on tourist visas or on a diplomatic or official visa.
And once they arrive, they can
apply for political asylum.
But it's unclear if Bolsonaro intends on applying for that.
His fleeing, though, has already been criticized
by the newly reelected President Lula, who said
this is what the Bolsonaro family is like Brazil
is their second country the US is their first
Lula there referring to events four years ago
when Flávio's father Jair Bolsonaro lost his
re-election bid and fled to Florida two days before
his presidential term ended a photo of
that time of him sitting alone
at the table eating KFC went viral at that time as well
he then settled into a residential life
for a few months before he headed back to Brazil
where he was ultimately found guilty for his role
in an attempted coup to overturn the election
results which had ousted him in the first place.
The elder Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year
sentence on house arrest
and had hoped that his son winning the presidency would result
in his freedom. But Flavio now appears
to be following in his father's footsteps by becoming
the latest Bolsonaro heading stateside.
His younger brother Eduardo is also in the US. He
is in self-imposed exile as he evades a four-year,
two-month prison sentence for coercion
and judicial interference.
Eduardo maintains close ties to the Trump administration
and was granted permanent residency
by Trump's State Department in July this year.
