We’ve got Mat in the latest BMW M4 CS, and he’s going up against the M8 Competition! Let’s take a closer look at these contenders…
Starting with the M4 CS, it’s powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six that delivers 550hp and 650Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed auto, and it tips the scales at 1,760kg. As new, it costs £117,000.
The M8 Competition is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, and this puts down 625hp and 750Nm. As with the M4, power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed auto, and it weighs in at 1,975kg. A new one of these will set you back £137,000.
So the M8 is up on power, but it’s also a few years older than the M4! Will the age difference matter? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!
What will win in a drag race between
a BMW M8 Competition and a BMW M4 CS?
Well, we're going to find out by racing
them over the standing quarter mile.
I'm Matt Watson. You're watching CarWow.
BMW M4 CS has a 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six,
550hp, 650Nm of torque,
all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic gearbox with launch control.
It weighs 1,760kg and costs from £117,000.
The BMW M8 Competition has a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, 625hp,
750Nm of torque, all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic gearbox,
also with launch control.
It weighs 1,975 kilograms.
Anyway, two BMWs,
the flagship
of the BMW M range.
Yeah, yeah, it's the, for want of a better word, flagship proper M car.
Though, to be fair, I think this could be the flagship proper M.
M car because this M4 CS is just so good.
It'll be interesting to see what happens with this drag
race. You've got more power, you've got more torque,
but you've got more weight. I know those
things launch like crazy, but this thing launches like crazy.
I'm down two cylinders, but I'm not
sure it's going to matter. I think it sounds
better than your car anyway. Have a listen.
Listen.
Sometimes less is more. Definitely
is the case with this particular car.
What's your bet? Do you reckon you're going to win or I'm going to win?
I think I'm going to win.
Ooh, confident. I think I'm going to win. Shall we find out?
Oh, before we do, if you're thinking about selling
your car, you can do it through Carway.
Just upload photos of your car, brief description,
then dealers all across the country will bid on your car.
Let's go on with the race.
Oh, what's going
on? How is that
so far ahead?
Absolutely took off. It is brutal.
This shouldn't
be happening.
How was that, Nick?
You were a bit behind me on the launch
and you stayed well behind.
So I've got everything off here.
Should be launching as it should.
Launch control is engaged
and apparently working perfectly,
but it just feels like I'm just not getting all the power
this engine can deliver in first gear.
Try brake boost, innit?
I think we have a winner.
That was much better.
Okay, do you know what?
I'll do your best, three out of five,
just to give you enough scope
to pick the right way to launch that car.
Yeah, deal. Fair enough.
Three.
Oh, closer.
Come on, Billy,
come on!
Pull it, though.
I'm starting to speak now.
Just not having it, are we?
Was that better?
It's better, and it's launching,
but I don't know if it's just 140, 50 kilos
that this weighs more than yours does,
but it doesn't get off the line as quickly.
This is so quick.
I said best three out of five,
so you've got one more race,
It can do better.
Close off the line.
Oh, it's close!
Oh, I've got him!
No, he's got me, he's blooming got me!
Look at that thing go.
Wake up.
I had you off the line there, I think.
Let me just check with the stewards.
Stewards, was that launch okay?
No.
There we go.
I think I've got the knack now.
What you need to do is engage launch control,
let it rev up to 3,000,
and then immediately lift off the brake
as it's still building boost.
That's what makes this car launch the best.
Do you reckon we do one more?
Ha,
ha,
ha!
I was a bit slow off the line there.
Come
on!
I'm coming past, though.
Ha, ha, ha!
Yeah.
Oh, but it's one he's going to win, though!
Bye-bye.
Oh Nick, that was just so close that was.
You beat me off the line but somehow
this car just pulled past you.
Yeah, I had everything there. I had all the power, all the
torque, had a great launch. There was nothing I could do.
You just walked past. Unfortunately.
This is just quicker. This is insanely fast.
Yeah, I've got to give it to you.
That thing's the whole package, isn't it?
Wow.
So then, what exactly happened?
Well, the slow-motion action replay reveals that the M4 CS won,
though both cars completed the standing quarter mile
in an impressive 10.8 seconds.
Before our next race, a little message
that could well help you if you're looking to buy a used car,
bike or van any time soon. We've partnered
with our friends at CarVertical to give you
a special offer to check that it's not a write-off,
stolen or had its mileage changed.
Look at this BMW 3 Series on CarVertical.
It's got green ticks for odometer and finance,
but a damage warning. Why?
It was previously involved in an accident and was a cat-S write-off.
You'd never have known that without a car history check.
So when buying a used car,
bike or van run a car vertical report using code CARWOW for 20%
off or by following the link in the description. Now back to the race.
Right now we have a rolling race from 50 miles an hour.
The cars are in their most relaxed
settings so efficient mode for the engine.
We're in automatic mode with like the least aggressive
changes. We're going to race over the half mile
from 50 miles an hour. I'm going to call it in
see what happens. Actually before we do that if you want
to see a crazy saving on one of these
cars through Carwow
It's completely bonkers.

because I found an amazing offer through CarWow.
One of these two BMWs could blow your mind.
Right, let's race.
Three, two, one, go.
I'm starting to speak now.
Come on, M8.
Kick down, there we go.
Now the M8
should
come past.
I have a horrible feeling it's gonna stay ahead too.
Well, Nick, it's quite close, but really,
it should have been quite close, but the other
way around when you think about the positioning
of these cars in the BMW range.
Yeah, but weirdly, once we got to, you know,
silly speeds, 150 plus, I have a feeling this
was pulling on your car.
So, once we start in third, full beans mode, I might have you.
Uh, maybe, maybe not.
We'll find out.
Now we have another rolling race from 50 miles an hour,
this time in full attack mode and a roll on in third gear.
Okay, let's do it. Three, two, one, go.
Come on, M8. Got to get him this time.
He's not going to have me.
Back now.
Oh, it's ever so close.
Too little, too late
I think this M4 CS is one of those cars where BMWs
are completely downplaying the numbers
and if we got this on a dyno it's doing well over
the claimed horsepower.
Yeah absolutely.
I mean I think we've had an M8, sorry,
we've had an M5 on the dyno and that was definitely
the case.
So who's to say?
Maybe we need to do that.
I mean that's got over 600 horsepower
but this is driving like it's got 600 horsepower.
It really is.
What do you reckon?
Do you think BMW are telling lies about
the actual horsepower from this CS?
Right, final challenge, let's do it.
Brake test.
If you'd rather watch another drag race,
click on the pop-out button up there
or scan the QR code on screen now.
If you want to see which of these cars
will brake in the shortest distance,
stay here because we're going to do it now.
100 miles an hour.
Full emergency stop at the line.
I'm going to get closer to really jab
that brake pedal super hard.
Here comes the line.
Oh my god, this car stops like crazy.
I'm so impressed with this CS. It just does everything
so very well. It makes you wonder why on earth you'd have the M8.
Maybe you've just got a big
garage to fill. I don't know.
This is a less divisive looking car, but yeah, that M4 CS is.
Like I said, it's the whole package, isn't it?
This looks better as well. It is the whole package.
Now, if you want to compare these cars,
four more times to everything else we've ever drag
