Jon Sumrall Reveals BLUEPRINT to building the Gators like Georgia

He talked a little bit about recruiting, which I loved,
and he also talked a lot about Georgia's roster
and who they are and how they're built,
and spoke very highly of Georgia,
which we've heard that a lot.
That doesn't really surprise me,
but a couple things that he said that piqued my interest.
Number one, he talked about how his schedule last week,
and I don't know if it was every Tuesday, Wednesday,
or just last Tuesday, Wednesday, but how he...
Off-season, yeah.
Sorry?
Off-week, the bye week.
Okay, just the off-week, how he spent that Tuesday, Wednesday,
which was looking at it at 2027,
but I think he's kind of speaks.
That's what he does throughout the week,
throughout the years.
Like these two days,
what I do,
you know,
consistently is I'm looking ahead into the future.
I get with,
I basically sit down with the GM and,
you know,
he didn't say this.
I'm using my own words here,
but the money people of how we want to attack the off season,
how we want to attack the portal,
how we want to attack recruiting.
And then he even said,
look,
I was,
you know,
planes, trains and,
and,
and,
uh,
cars on Friday,
Thursday or Friday,
Saturday,
recruiting kids,
which I loved hearing like I mean it was refreshing
to hear like hey it was it was a bye week
for the football team but for me it was you know
that five year plan what do we do
to look forward that was just a
small little tidbit that I was like man it was
cool to hear usually we're so into football in the middle
of the season but it is important
we do and it's for me
the recruiting stuff is kind of like second
fiddle at this point I know they're doing that
I'm aware of it because we had Corey Bender
on like I'm seeing
the articles being written and the momentum that's
happening and I heard about these guys
visiting Hudson West
and Frederick Arch, who's a
2027 edge with Bam Harmon
We had that conversation with Corey
Bender, so that doesn't surprise me, but
hearing him talk about
again, I know it's their job, but hearing
him discuss sitting down with the
GM, talking about the future, where
things are. The other thing that I found very
intriguing is when breaking down
the Georgia roster, kind of gave us an
insight to the blueprint, which counters
what we talked about with Corey Bender a little bit.
And he said, look, when you
look at Georgia's roster here I spent
the entire bye-week studying this roster and here's what I
love about this when I first got this started
the show the way that I look at it goes who's at the
best at what I want to do yeah and I go
and study I go watch I go see what I like I take what I like
I leave the rest what is this guy doing like
a lot of people compare like always make fun of
Pat McAfee light I don't necessarily watch
to emulate him genuinely I know it may appear that
way because we're both little gingers
and you know crackheads I understand that but I don't I
don't necessarily take my how I want
to be after him I will try to emulate Colin Cowherd what I
went and looked at Pat McAfee for was where did he start
because everyone looks at where they're at
now but they started somewhere so i actually flipped his youtube
and went back to the beginning
and it was very inspiring because he just started
with his boys in his studio and it looked like
ass and i was like if the guy that's
on espn started basically the same way that i'm starting
then anything is possible
and people ask me hey like you it's not don't let this intimidate you because
this is a long way from where you're starting
but you got to start somewhere and it's okay to start
wherever you think is going to be so little soapbox box there
but it's important to study
where you want to go and he talked about like
this this guy's been doing it for 11 years
and when you look at their roster they're good
in all these areas and you can see
and this is huge right we don't have this scent yet
or this listen go ahead i'm gonna let you
feel this good boy you know i know you know what it
is right like that that scent of winning and
you can see it in a lot of players regardless of in a year
or two you see it carry over from
from class to class that culture that he talks about
but he talked about and when you look at
the kid that is at georgia you go where'd they come
from their high school was next to their
name not the previous college
he goes look at ours half of it has high school but half of it
has their previous college which is fine
because i don't want to be that heavily in the portal
i want to have it to where and he said that before
that part didn't surprise me but we had bender on
and this isn't to say that Bender is wrong
or that may still be the game plan
for this first go around
but ideally the goal is to get to
a heavy recruiting class
where you're only taking 10-6 dudes
in the transfer portal
but you and I have talked
it feels like this particular portal class
I think is going to be different
but maybe not
maybe they want to amplify a few more 20-27 dudes
but he talks about winning now
I just don't know if you're there
to win now by taking a light portal class
So still a lot of unknown to see how they attack
this portal based on those comments.
Yeah, I think a second offseason with some guys that stay
is enough to get you going in the right direction.
Building the culture that you need here.
We have the coaches.
We got the fire energy.
We need some guys that are going to be staple for him that are going
to stay around and say, hey, I want to get developed.
Can you not say and promise me,
but can you are you going to be able to develop me if I don't leave?
Can I go to the NFL?
We still have to keep that the main picture.
Yeah, you're making money now,
but saying you played in the NFL is a whole other thing.
And I think Georgia has been able to do that.
But when you're talking about a guy, the biggest thing,
11 years, brother, at a program is unheard of in today's world.
Yeah.
And so, of course, your imprint
and blueprint is everywhere around that program.
Like, everyone there knows what you've had class after
class after class after class that stuck around for you.
you graduated with two groups of seniors down to three.
If you,
if you know what I mean
we make it to 12.
So,
I mean,
that,
that's a,
that's a,
that's a big deal.
And,
uh,
it is unheard of.
And I don't Florida first.
I,
we,
we ain't got the patience
I already know.
We,
we don't have the patience to do that,
but if you win now,
you win,
you got to win now.
And maybe those things can happen,
but I don't know if any coach in Florida gets to 11 years.
And that's it.
I hope we do, brother,
but I don't know if 11 years is possible at Florida
with just the way we are.
You usually want to come in here and talk about PricePicks.
We talk about putting together a fancy lineup,
and we love putting together our lineups.
But this one hits home.
As someone who loved collecting cards
and as a hobby when I was younger,
now you can do it on your phone with the new PricePicks picks feature.
So click on the picks app here, and then it shows you a pack of cards.
You get to rip one card anywhere.
A pack of cards worth $1 to up to, I think, $2,500 is a pack,
and it's one card in there.
And those cards that you get vary from a separate price.
It is an absolute blast to do.
The big Holy Grail, though, is also an opportunity.
You can get a card from anywhere from $50,000 to $8 million.
The signed Cooper Flagg card is also in these packs.
Again, the Holy Grail.
We're going to open one right now from packs,
to show you how this thing works because it is an absolute blast
to continue to see what you're able to get.
Oh, we're in the fatty!
At the fatty!
We got to go.
This isn't the Holy Grail,
but this is one of the bigger packs that you can get.
And we're going to see the return on this right here.
We spent $10 and made $25.
So just like that, we got an additional $15 in the bank.
Great stuff there with PrizePicks.
That's fun.
This is what makes it fun.
And again, if you want that card,
if you're a big Eagles fan and you love that,
you can add it to your locker and they will send it back to you.
That's what's going on right now.
Again, for new users, best of all,
if you rip your first $5 pack, you can get $25 in bonus packs.
Just use that code HMA when you sign up.
And if you're an existing user, don't worry.
They've got you covered, too.
Five free bonus packs have dropped in your account
and are already ready to rock and roll.
Check those out.
PrizePicks.
It is good to be right.
We're going to be great, for sure.
And you've got to show us serious signs
of getting the turn in the right direction.
I just believe what he's done this year,
his first year, has shown us those signs.
You beat two top 10 teams.
You go on the road to Texas and take care of business there.
The players are starting to buy into what you're selling them.
And your first recruiting class hasn't
really fully came into the door yet.
The last class we had were the guys
that were already committed to Coach Napier,
and they just stayed along.
And so he hasn't even had his first full class of guys
that have the mentality that he wants here.
And so I think that's going to do a lot for us.
But Georgia, 11 years, brother, that's a long time.
Well, I think what might change that a little bit,
and he spoke to it a little bit about the playoff expansion,
because the expectation, I think, will change a little bit.
Yeah, for sure.
It'll reset people's mindsets a little bit.
Like, I think eventually it's going to be similar to March Madness.
Like, you can't, like, for Florida, like, you can't go round one
and get bounced three years in a row.
Like, that is a failure.
Yeah, no, never.
So my point is, like, but at first it's like,
hey, just get to the dance.
All right, cool.
You get to the dance.
You get to round two.
Like, you find ways.
The expectation is higher and higher and higher.
And so for where Florida's at, it's like, look, we just got to,
we just want to sniff it.
So you can get two or three years of sniffing it.
Well, all of a sudden you're year four.
now you've got a three-year span where you've got
to win a couple of rounds and i'm not obviously i
want more than that but my point
to the long tenure, I think you're going to be able to
yeah i think turn look i think Beamer hell he's on year seven
or eight at south carolina he was
kind of like wobbling there you know black eye
but that's crazy now think about what he just did
he may have just extended himself four more years
that's crazy yeah right like he was on the way
But it's also the wildness of, like, of ups and downs.
Like you said, Florida fans, if Napier has two off years.
Unless you're Florida State, then you just hold on to what you got.
Yeah, I think he's great.
I think you build around Norvell.
You know what I mean?
I think that's a guy.
You what?
You build around Norvell.
Like, that's a guy you go all in on.
I don't want my coach jogging with me to practice every morning, bro.
I want him already there.
I love it.
But, look, it's exciting because we've talked.
I mean, myself, I always say blueprint.
It's a word that I use a lot.
when describing recruiting and how you want
to attack it, we've seen bits and pieces of it, we
don't have the full foundation just yet
and I don't know, it's always going to be evolving, right
with how I think money gets passed around, how portal rules will change
but what is going to be
the consensus, right, like are we going
to attack trenches heavy go heavily there and develop in
other areas, portal, these specific spots, is it going
to, is it going to banter, I don't know, right
we're still learning it, I think we, the one key thing
is that they want to recruit heavily in
trenches, which is part of that Georgia blueprint, look, I
for me the best combo would be a a sniff
of Miami with a little bit of touch of Georgia
and then your own flavored sauce of Florida, right
like that is, I think, if you could build
your own blueprint through that, uh, because of where your
location is, I think you can, you know, get away
with a few things, I think, I don't think Indiana
can do that, I don't think Indiana can, can ride off
of like a Georgia blueprint where they can
recruit heavily based on location historics all
those things, they, they have to take a different
route, right, so Florida, based on their location, can, can get
a little more creative, I think, of how
they attack it, so it's cool to hear him kind
of foreshadow that a bit, we haven't really heard
about it in quite some time because it's been all football
which I've loved, yeah, and we're going to
start upping up into the pay, not saying to throw money
at anybody it's for the retaining the roster
guys that are going to stay on the roster you got
to start compensating some of those guys to remain
here not saying they got to be some astronomical number they got
to believe in the vision of what
we're building but to get to that upper echelon we got
to start gotta start shelling out a little
more money to keep guys around no i agree i think
that the investment all around has to amplify as
well i think like you have to i'm all for being smart
and being healthy but i i think that you
probably gotta you you need to be up another five
to six million like i'd be in a different world
than we are now go ahead yeah
and i think with as far as recruiting with what we're doing i believe
offensive line is essential right i think you can
find some fringe players on the defensive line
that maybe are not five stars
but can come in and produce you look at stevie bentley this man was
just playing in high school a couple months ago he'll
be playing in high school again this year
But now he's out there playing the big time games, contributing,
not saying he's making a ton of plays, but because he's out there,
it lets you know what he can bring to the table.
And he's only a freshman. So I think we're trying to mix and match,
but we have to secure the offensive line.
And I think that's the first major step they're taking in the trenches.
And it's up for Coach Chapman because he's probably taking the backseat
to some of the money that's coming in because they're saying,
oh, well, we know you can develop these guys.
we can take some smaller guys
and you'll get them up to speed faster than than some of these other
guys where we just gonna throw money at these guys no he does need some money
and that's been a big hang
up with why he's not able to land some of these other guys
but he's developing guys uh along the
way as well but if you if you're starting if you're starting here
and other guys are starting
here with the guys they're bringing
in yeah chapman may bring them up to here but they still
only it's still only here right yeah
and so but if you're going to start somewhere you need to
start on offensive line if you don't score any
points we ain't winning no games this day in
college football like it's offense uh the game has favored
the offense over time now so we need to
win in the offensive trenches we'll build
in the defensive trenches for sure as well but we gotta
gotta have you gotta keep the money
Thank
you.
