The rest of the Friends cast all walked in together,
and I hadn't seen them in easily
20 years. And then all five of them walked up
to the casket holding hands and stood around him
crying. That was Matthew Perry's half-sister,
Mia Perry Bowick, revealing intimate details
from her brother's funeral for the first time
in Netflix's new docuseries, The One About Matthew
Perry. Bowick, along with many of Perry's close friends,
speak out in the new three-part series.
But noticeably absent were all of Perry's friends' co-stars.
A source told Page Six Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow,
Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer all decided not to participate.
The docuseries chronicles Matthew Perry's rise to fame,
his struggles with addiction, and tragically,
his discovery of ketamine, which led to his drowning in 2023.
In archival footage, the series shows Perry discussing
a jet ski accident that led to his painkiller addiction.
The actor admits that he started to take more painkillers
because he was feeling sick from
the effects of withdrawal when he didn't.
His sister Mia also shares that tabloid magazines
alerted her to her brother's addiction struggles in the late 90s,
admitting she was initially in
denial because she didn't know.
She said her brother felt a connection to Chandler's character
because he was, quote, a guy trying to distract everybody
from how miserable he was all the time
by being funny. Mia said her brother's addiction worsened
as Friends got into its later seasons.
She said he struggled with tremors
and withdrawal symptoms while filming.
His close friends also reveal at one point Perry
was attending AA meetings three times a day.
Mia also shared that Perry spent upwards
of $7 million trying to get sober.
Then Perry discovered ketamine, and friends
and family noticed he appeared happier and in a good mental place.
But his sister, as a professional addiction counselor, revealed she
was deeply skeptical about treating addiction with another drug.
The series also unveils that Perry struggled ahead
of the 2021 Friends reunion taping.
His sister said his health was declining
and he was nervous about being on camera.
Then came the public reaction.
He hadn't been on camera in a while
and you could see him struggling in it.
It's tough to watch because he's just not himself.
It's hard to see the comments online about it.
His sister also reminisced on the filming of Chandler
and Monica's wedding on Friends.
Mia said the episode came at a difficult time,
when the family was worried about him, as
he was struggling in relationships due to his addiction.
Former girlfriends also speak out in the documentary.
Actress Rom Shidanloo, who dated Perry in 2011,
said intimacy was both his greatest
wish and biggest fear.
Another ex-girlfriend, Renee Ashton,
also made a wild claim that she and Perry joined
the Mile High Club on none other than Bruce Willis' private plane.
Finally, his sister opens up about the betrayal she felt
by her brother's assistant, Kenneth
Iwamasa, who pleaded guilty to one count
of conspiracy to distribute ketamine causing
death.
He was sentenced in May to serve three
and a half years in federal prison.
Mia blasted Iwamasa, saying he knew Matthew Perry for 30 years,
and the family feels betrayed
by him, adding, quote, he should have known better.
And that's just some of the many bombshells
in Netflix's The One About Matthew Perry.
