All great stories have comedy and tragedy in them,
and that certainly was Matthew's story.
I was extremely happy when I got famous.
Then it's like, uh-oh, this didn't fix what's inside me.
This didn't do what I thought it was going to do.
My brother would talk about that feeling of emptiness
or loneliness that he couldn't quite fill.
For millions of Americans, Matthew
Perry felt like one of their friends.
But to Mia Perry Bowick, he was her big brother.
She sat down for the Netflix docuseries
The One About Matthew Perry, out October 27th,
and Page Six has what she said,
plus exclusive details from the director about Matthew's funeral.
First, Matthew's sister Mia revealed that the Chandler
and Monica wedding episode of Friends
was bittersweet for their family,
because they didn't know if they would ever get to see him
walk down the aisle in real life. She told People magazine,
When we saw that wedding, we all knew that he had wanted that in life.
He wanted a partner, and he wanted kids.
We all knew how serious his disorder was,
so there was this sense of, who knows what's going to happen?
That episode was the season seven finale in 2001,
and immediately after they wrapped,
Matthew was driven back to the treatment center
in a pickup truck helmed by a sober technician.
He revealed in his 2022 book, Friends,
Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
Matthew Perry never married or had kids.
He struggled with drug and alcohol addiction
throughout his life, and in 2023,
he tragically drowned in his hot tub while under the influence
of ketamine. He was 54.
Mary Robertson, the Emmy-winning director of the three-part Netflix
doc, spoke exclusively with Page Six about the actor's memorial.
She described a surprisingly
sweet moment. At one point,
Mia started laughing in the middle of the funeral because she felt her
brother's presence. She said,
He showed up right behind my right shoulder and goes,
how f***ed up is this? And I started laughing so hard.
I was like, oh my god, there he is,
making me laugh at the most horrible moment,
and also incredibly inappropriate for me to start
laughing. But I just started cracking up,
and I was like, yeah man, this is pretty f***ed up.
In another emotional moment detailed in the doc,
the rest of the Friends cast walked into the
funeral together. Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox,
Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc.
Mia said all five of them walked up to the casket holding hands
and stood around him, crying.
Robertson asked the beloved sitcom stars to participate in her doc,
but they declined, as did Matthew's other family members.
Robertson told Page Six,
I think everyone grieves in their own way, and I understand
why someone might feel that this isn't the moment to talk.
And I understand Mia felt this was absolutely the moment
when she should be sharing this really raw and open and vulnerable
and powerful and funny account of loving her brother.
A source previously told Page Six
that Jennifer Aniston would never sit down for a documentary
like this one because she doesn't want to relive the pain
and have it be so public.
The one about Matthew Perry premieres Tuesday, October 27th on Netflix.
