Why Motor Shows Sucked!
1 Video View·Oct 26, 2026
I'm watching TikTok live.
Try to say something.
We're about to get into it.
I'm wrapping this intro, then we're diving in.
Are we?
Oh, okay.
Really?
Okay.
I've just been prompted by TikTok to stop waffling and get serious.
It seems...
All right.
I didn't know that TikTok actually does that, but okay.
Well, you know what?
One of the things that we can talk about
is the recent Paris Motor Show, because a lot
happened at the Paris Motor Show,
which I was not expecting, to be honest with you.
I mean, honestly, like, you know,
when I was working back in the day at magazines, car magazines,
and particularly I worked at a company called JATO Dynamics.
And at the time, and I'm talking, you know, right up to probably,
I would say, 2010s, maybe 2010s, but maybe not.
But certainly up to about a decade ago, maybe a little more than
a decade ago, motor shows were still a big thing.
And if I wasn't going to a motor show to cover the motor show,
which, of course, was always quite a tricky thing.
you'd go to a motor show, you'd go on press day,
it'd be very busy, and then you'd run around,
you wouldn't have much time, you'd run around,
you had a press office and everything where you
could set up, but you run around,
because the thing was, the press conferences that were
happening, so the car launches, and of course,
you didn't always know who was going to have the
most significant or important launch,
but they're all back to back to back, and sometimes they'd be
here, sometimes they'd be in another hall,
usually they tried to do in such a way that you could go
from one go around but again it depends on the importance
of the manufacturer and so you go you'd
be you'd basically be corralled and shepherded from one
car launch or press conference to another
and another and another
and you had very little time to actually put that information up um and
then of course we got internet
and stuff like that and we were starting to go live so a little
bit quicker but then it was always a bit problematic
so it was it was fun to go to an actual
motor show because you got to see
the actual products you got to see the glamour of the
launches you maybe got to talk to executives
and engineers and people like that but you didn't have
much time to relay that coverage until later
on in the day by which time you were then competing
with everyone else as well when i didn't go to a motor show
then what i would do so there's a there's
a there's a press agency that you get all
the press releases from so all the manufacturers
would very soon then start putting the press releases
from their launches and from their
conferences onto the system um which actually
is not as comprehensive now as it used to be sadly
um not as many people will put the um all the press releases there
but anyway a lot of people
did and so if i didn't actually go to a motor show
so i just sit there and i would wait for a
flood of these releases and pictures
and all this news that would be coming in and then i'd be able
to then turn that around and then upload that onto you know facebook
or the website or whatever
and so it used to be a big deal
it used to be really
motor shows used to be a really really big deal
and so that was quite good
but what was starting to happen
again to do with the internet
and motor shows
so what happened with manufacturers
is that they figured that they're at a motor show
and they're launching their cars
and of course they're all competing with the headlines
and to try and get the biggest story of the day
to try and be the car of the show
and all the rest of it
but they don't necessarily know
what all the other manufacturers are doing
and so what they find is that they launch a car
and they think right we've won all the headlines
people loved it and then ferrari just launched a car
and everybody's like whoa ferrari of course
that's going to be the car of the show
and then across the hall lamborghini launches something
else and then everybody's like oh lamborghini you know
so then that becomes a bit of a problem
and so what they realized is that instead of trying
to compete with all the other manufacturers
at motor shows, at actual
motor show events, what they could do
is they could just switch to
launching directly, and especially because they
built such big following and such
huge numbers of
subscribers on their own social media
platforms, and they thought, well, okay, what we'll
do is we'll just, ah, hello,
so there is a comment, you see,
you can see the comment, I follow you on YouTube
and here, keep up the good work, thank you so much
to Mohamed Barrio, I hope I pronounced that
correct, anyway, so what they would do
is they thought well you know what what we'll
do is we'll just launch directly we'll launch directly
on our platforms to our loyal following and you know
and also we'll stagger it out so instead of
everybody launching cars at a motor show
and you have like a dozen two dozen car launches coming
out on the same day in the same week
and all competing for the headlines in the motoring
press and everything else then it becomes a problem
so manufacturers thought well you know
what we're not going to do that we're just going
to launch whenever we feel like through directly
through internet and our own platforms etc etc
and a lot of them started doing live launches for
example where they book a conference there'd
be some media there but they would stream it live
on youtube and what have you and they were doing
it that way and they still do and they're all
still doing that what i saw at the paris motor shows
and I'm round about coming back to the
Paris Motor Show that just happened a couple of uh a week
or so ago uh is that we seem to have
gone back to how it used to be because suddenly there
was a flurry an absolute avalanche if you
like of incredible concept cars one after
the other admittedly most of them were from Stellantis
group so if you know Stellantis group Stellantis owns Chrysler Dodge
in America but in Europe
Chrysler is basically Fiat which of course
then owns Citroen and DS and Vauxhall and Alfa Romeo
etc etc you know um and Peugeot um so they launched
a flurry of concepts but there were
some others as well that launched outside
for example Renault, Renault's not part of that group and
they launched a couple of things so all of a sudden
and these weren't just you know yet another
crossover yet another SUV but they were actually really stop
and stare concepts i would call them
you know stop and stare uh concepts where you go oh whoa what
is that you know the sort of the
sort of concepts that as a kid you know
if you're being dragged around a motor show, you'd be... no, no, wait
wait, I want to see this and I want to get a poster for it
and I want to get a brochure for it, that
sort of thing, so that was good, that was... so I thought
that was an incredible return to form
for motor shows and I thought that was quite impressive
the way that we we we suddenly had
this buzz of excitement around the Paris Motor Show
which you know, Paris was one of the big, so
if you say the big motor shows, right, Paris Motor Show, uh
which used to alternate, I still probably
does with the Frankfurt Motor Show, Frankfurt Motor Show physically
was the biggest motor show of all
um, I don't think I've done Paris, I can't remember
I've done Frankfurt, massive, done Geneva, Geneva
was the other big one and then Detroit
that i've done Detroit Detroit was a big one as well
um but they've all sort of lost their importance
but pardon you forget London Motor Show we used
to have a long time ago but that no significance there there's
a new one coming though there's a
new london motor show happening stay tuned i'm going
to keep on top of it and see what's going
on and certainly i will go to it um anyway
so paris motor show certainly blew the cobwebs away
and went back to what motor shows were all about
which was about dazzling showgoers and the world's
media with some incredible concepts and ideas
and that's what they started to do there and i and i
think that you know the stellantis definitely won
that and of course if you say which car won it you
would say that uh the Citroen 2CV concept definitely won it
because you know it was
adorable but then i also like the the Alpine
A310 i thought was magnificent and then that Alfa Romeo
the name of which i won't even pronounce
or try to pronounce um it was stunning absolutely stunning
although a bit reminiscent of the Mazda RX-8
because it had rear suicide doors and the doors
would open like that and a coupe profile
and it very much reminded me of Mazda RX-8 but suddenly
there was something interesting now sadly most of these are concepts
and the question is are they
actually going to be production cars i mean
you've basically got everybody excited you've got
everybody salivating you've got everybody sharing you know
this stuff online but are you going to
actually build it for them can should they
be saving up to buy them you see this is a question
and that's not necessarily the case
although they do say with the 2CV which like i said
was probably the undisputed star of the show adorable even more
so in van form strangely
enough um absolutely crazy inside as well really nice
um they have said that there is a new small
compact car coming in 2028 so year after next
which will be based on that and so how much of
a concept idea i saw you test driving
so pat bateman says i saw you test driving the Changan
Deepal S05 and ordered one no way did you tell Changan you see
this is the thing right i love
it thank you so much for that comment much
appreciated thank you so much and thanks for
watching and thanks for doing that and thanks
for saying that but one thing i'd love is for
for people to actually tell the manufacturers that right
because then you know a lot of there
are a lot of car reviewers out there
and a lot of them have far more views and far more subscribers
than i do but what i try to do in my car reviews
is give you real world practical information that
will help you and i'm not biased right i try
to you know i'm i try i try to take my own uh biases
out of it and try to think about
who the car is for and look at it that way you know and that's
what i try to do and invariably i do thank you
so much pat but i do get a lot of comments like
yourself pat where people say that you know
your review helped me make that decision and uh this
is where like you know i would love
for the manufacturers to see that and understand the
importance of giving a car to somebody
which is which you know it's 37 years nearly coming up this
end of this year will be 37 years
of reviewing cars i first reviewed a car back in 1989
um so there is a lot of experience there
and there's also a lot of understanding so i'm not
there stood there about getting a selfie
with the car i'm there to help people understand if that
car is for them so that that's what i tried
to do anyway back to motor shows so the point being
that you know are they going to build these cars
are they going to fulfill the promises that they
kind of made with these concept cars
and that will be something that we have to wait and see
at the moment it doesn't look too good
although there are some murmurings but weirdly enough the
Fiat Multipla not multiply Multipla
which was a concept that is kind of part SUV part MPV and
then transforms into a pickup truck
which i thought was genius but i thought it was one of
those show car things that would never actually
could nobody buy in the real world because it
doesn't make any sense but there are rumors
that they're gonna build that i'd love to see it in
real but anyway that would be crazy there has
been crazy stuff like that before what was that
Chevrolet SSR for example that was um a convertible
two-door convertible sports pickup truck yeah
anyway so so there are some crazy things out there
that have made it into production so let's
see maybe that will happen it'll be interesting create
car content Brown Car Guy has written the
only comprehensive guide that tells you exactly how get it now
from Amazon or Kindle Unlimited
so there was the murder show so that got everybody excited
then there were two other launches that
came out a few days after the murder show
and we'll just touch on them briefly before we wrap
this up so one of those was the Porsche Mission S
which there isn't a lot of detail about basically
all we know about the Porsche Mission S
is that it will be a series production car it's not a
limited production it will be a series production
car that will sit above the 911 so unlike the
previous like 918s of the world where there
were limited production special specialist cars the
Mission S will be a series production it will be available
but it ain't going to be cheap it's
going to if you think the top end 911s
are expensive imagine what that's going to be so
it'll be supercar hypercar territory right they
haven't revealed what's what it's going to drive
it but they have said it will be a combustion engine
car so that's good it's not going to be
an ev porsche are really going you know they they scrapped
the boxster and the cayman and said
right evs now and then they went yeah hold on a minute
and then they so now the boxster and
cayman replacements are delayed
um apparently they still will come as an ev but also as the
option of a hybrid now this mission s might be a hybrid
or it might just be a V8 combustion engine
we don't know, a straightforward combustion engine uh hybrid
or plug-in hybrid, all three of
these are possibilities. One thing we do know, it will not be an EV
and we also know that it will be
a heavily performance orientated there there
are levels of traction systems in the car but they're
really trying to make this a driver's
car as a Porsche should be and one of the great things I
loved about it was that on the steering um one
of the things they've done is there's no screens in
this thing so the only screen is your phone
if you want a screen you have to stick your phone
on the dashboard that's it otherwise there's
no screens there's just dials which is great but one
of the things i love about it is on the steering wheel there's
a button and on and on the center
spoke that goes down on the steering wheel
and on the button it says on your own so basically
that's on your own that's basically you press
that we've turned all the systems off and on you be it
you know that's that's basically what that is i love
that so we had that and on the same day
tesla launched the roadster rocket two things about
that first of all it doesn't look anything
like the tesla that was revealed
a few years ago where everybody placed 250 000 orders for
it doesn't look anything like that it looks like
a lamborghini ripoff now it basically looks like a
shoddy tracing paper clone of a lamborghini uh something
or other, firstly, secondly, the big stunt
was it flying, which looked amazing, it
was spectacular, they did, they won the internet
they broke the internet that day
and they continue to do so, it looked amazing, it was spectacular, but
you have to think about it, it was all really
cleverly choreographed and really cleverly staged
there was no human being in the car that went up the ramp
and did the flying thing nor the other
one that did the twist and barrel roll flying thing etc etc
but they did happen, they did happen
for real, now there is a discussion online
on whether those were real cars or not, because they
were using compressed cold air gas to do those things
so these weren't like you know jets or
anything, they were jets, but they're
not like you know like you would imagine not like rocket fuel
or anything like that, they were literally tanks
of gas that was really high psi that actually did
that but the coordination to shoot it off a ramp
and then to level it off is amazing and then land
it is quite amazing but in the real world you think about one
of those things being even this
fraction off and that person isn't walking away
from landing if there was a person in there which
there wasn't so that's that's that that is a little bit of a red flag
also like i said a lot
of people a lot of speculation online now i didn't say
that so much at the time but i did put out a
video which i won't remember it now but i put a lot of stats
and data in there about why the physics
of it is extremely difficult to for that to actually
be um you know an actual car uh in any
case they have tesla themselves
and you know Musk himself love him or hate him whatever he himself has
said that it's not um this it will not be safe
for the road for for the road so all of that rock
it's called a rocket one the one that has all
those flying features it won't be i don't think
it'll ever be legal for the road you know not for the time being anyway
and whether or not it is
actually realistic is another question even if it
was so the way that we worked it out and what i
said in my video is even if it was real if that jump
that it did it could only do that once and
then it would need like an hour plus to recharge
the tanks before it could do that anything like
that again plus the level of coordination
and everything that you would need to do that is
really difficult would you put a human in it
and what damage would you do to the road surface and
the traffic and the cars
and the people around you if you did that so that all i think is makes
it highly unrealistic and a lot of people have said
that look we paid 250,000 for the original
concept that was revealed a few years ago we haven't seen anything
and now Tesla on its form
on its website says place an order for it
but we cannot guarantee when you'll get it or if you'll
get it so that's extraordinary
for that i mean you know i'm you know millionaires plenty and they
can do what following their money you could soon part
and all the rest of it they can do what
they like with their 250,000 but 250,000
and no guarantee that you'll ever actually get a car
i mean that's extraordinary but anyway it was a great spectacle
and it made the kids and all of us
go whoa flying cars yeah finally
so we love we all love that but what the reality of it is i think
it's quite different but anyway
so there you go um i think uh i think that's enough for today
