Massimo Pedrazzi, born in Formigine (Italy) in 1959, currently lives and works in Solignano di Castelvetro.Pedrazzi creates his paintings using the technique of traditional Italian oil painting, with preparatory sketches, oil colours and long overlays of colour glazes exactly as taught by the Italian masters of the 16th century. This artist combines an ancient technique with modern subjects anti-naturalistic colours, placing figures in landscapes of magical realism rich in symbolism and quotationsOver the years he has tried his hand at various jobs, from commercial agent to clerk in the graphics sector, before devoting himself solely to his true vocation, painting, at the beginning of the 1990s, experimenting with all kinds of techniques and languages.Self-taught and guided by his great passion for art, Pedrazzi adopts an old-fashioned technique, uniquely executed in oil on board or canvas, made up of delicate glazes and calibrated touches of colour that layer after layer, with long drying times, bring out the pictorial work.Pedrazzi investigates the human figure, represented by enigmatic and fascinating characters, in perennial contrast to a 16th century natural landscape. In some works, it is the landscape itself that becomes the protagonist of the painting, sometimes animated by tightrope walkers or symbolic apparitions; in others, the human figure is presented devoid of any context and precisely for this reason so powerful in its immediacy. With an attentive eye on the great masters of the past such as Leonardo, Perugino and Van Eyck, Massimo Pedrazzi finds great affinity of thought and atmosphere in the work of his other contemporaries, including the Norwegian Odd Nerdrum and the American Aron Wiesenfeld.Several solo exhibitions and collaborations with art galleries in Italy and abroad.
