Philippe Viejo Painter France
Montauban,
Artist (Painting )
Born in 1967
The horizon for food, I like to travel to paint and paint to travel.
A man of travel, Philippe Viejo discovered the four corners of the world in his youth aboard a family boat built with his father. This first voyage was marked by the chaotic movements of the sea, the saturated colors of distant lands, and the practice of high-level freediving for over fifteen years in Martinique. From this journey, he retained a taste for adventure, which he now shares with his wife and children: several road trips in Eastern Europe, the USA, and Canada, and a crossing of the Americas from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska from July 2016 to August 2017.
Painting entered his life at a very young age. His teachers recognized his talent and encouraged him to enroll in a National School of Fine Arts. There, the young man honed his knowledge of various techniques. At 20, he held his first exhibition in the south of France. Around twenty figurative canvases were displayed. They were all sold, and he won the Ingres Prize. Other regional and national prizes followed, notably the special prize for abstract painting at Artoulouse in 2015. From an extended stay in Mexico City, where he experienced the devastating 2017 earthquake, he brought back new sources of inspiration and launched an international career. He now has a permanent exhibition at the XXI Gallery in Mexico City, and his works can now be found on walls in France, the United States, Mexico, Peru, Panama, and Belgium.
Today, he offers a mature and accomplished painting style; the figurative gradually fades away in favor of a personal representation of the world embodied by matter, movement, and color.
Paintings of travel, journeys of painting, his canvases tell of both the world outside and the world within. The world the artist has seen. The world that made him a man. A contemplative work that describes the beauty of the world and the richness of its mysteries. And that prompts the viewer to reflect on their own journey. For to offer such a vision of the world, one must have truly lived. Better yet, one must have chosen one's life wisely.
