Rich, Aaron, I mean, take a look here behind me.
I mean, this is the Manor Haven Adult Home,
and you can see the area where
the car plunged right into the side of it,
right through the bushes here and into the side of the building,
and there is some pretty significant damage.
Twenty-seven residents had to be displaced
because of this damage here to the building.
Take a look at some of the video from the scene last night.
Suffolk County Police say that officers
responded to the assisted living facility
at 222 Columbia Street a little after 10 o'clock last night.
Investigators said the driver in this
Honda Civic was going north on McKinley Road
when the car left the roadway and struck the building.
Now the driver fled the scene leaving
their car behind before police arrived. Video from the scene
shows the red car with significant front end damage
as water gushed out of the building.
Suffolk County fire officials said the crash caused
the basement to flood and the utilities
had to be shut off. Luckily, no one was injured,
but those 27 residents had to be relocated to
multiple adult homes.
Right now, we do not know how many homes took those people in or where
those facilities are. We are working to get more information.
The Huntington Town Building
Department was here looking at the damage.
We've reached out this morning very early
to try and get a sense of exactly what
the extent of the damage is and what it'll take
to reopen. We'll bring an update as soon as we hear back.
And we do know this morning that the
Red Cross is working to get people
who were displaced here relocated into at least some temporary homes
for the night or for the foreseeable future.
We've reached out to the Red Cross as well,
so we're waiting to hear back from them to see what their plan is.
So a lot of moving pieces as we go throughout the morning.
We'll work to get more answers, and we'll bring you those updates.
For now, we're in Huntington Station in Suffolk County.
