Hundreds of loyal patrons gathered for one final meal to pay tribute to the restaurant, marking the emotional end of a decades-long era of comfort food and community in Metro Detroit.
The final goodbye to what has been a staple on Woodward Avenue.
Today, the doors at the Sign of the Beef Carver closed for good
as hundreds turned out with a hearty appetite to pay tribute.
Here's Fox 2's Ingrid Kelly.
That's a wrap.
Well, that's what they say in TV to signal the end.
Well, today, that same applies to this iconic restaurant
that's been an institution in Michigan for decades.
One last time.
This is the last time you're going to be opening up for the customers.
Talk to me about that.
It's very emotional.
we're going to miss everybody coming out here
and we're hoping that we can get as many people
through as we can today. The end of an era.
People from all across Metro Detroit lining up early
Sunday morning to get one last plate of comfort food
at Sign of the Beef Carver. When you heard
that it was closing for good what went through your mind?
I hope to get a spot and hope to get
in the door. I've been this is my third time coming back
to see if I can get in. Talk to me
about being here on the final day.
It means everything to me. The Beef Carver holds a special
place in my heart my father's favorite restaurant i've
been coming here since i was a little kid
he's not here anymore with us
but he's still here in memory at the restaurant
and there it is the comfort foods
that remind people of home it's why
this decision to close
is so tough for patrons to swallow it's been five years in the making
but it's uh we've been
subsidizing we love our employees so much
so we've been trying everything we could possibly
try to either control costs or get more people
in and it's a it's a game of arithmetic unfortunately
at the end of the day
and we lost the battle sign of the beef carver equals sign of the times
oh that's clever yeah i suppose we could say
that yes this restaurant is more than home style
cooking it's the family business my father bought
this building the year i was born and we opened
in the next year, so I've never known a world
without this store.
This is, it's devastating.
And it's mostly devastating
because we just love our employees.
It's really emotional, my man.
All the customers and my coworkers
became family over the time.
And this home-style cooking
was the glue that united them all.
It is just a meal that I've always,
I've grown accustomed to, and I really enjoy it.
You're gonna savor all those bites.
Every last bite.
I wanna be there to see the last plate of beef go out,
because that's going to be the last,
that'll be the official end of an era.
