Halloween just around the corner next week.
And if you plan to celebrate, to create a, you know, spooky look,
doesn't have to break the bank and,
you know, make your pocketbook scary.
This morning, we are duplicating some
luxury catalog decorations for under $10
with simple household items that you can find in your very own home.
Joining us, our good friend in the Fox 5 kitchen,
DIY expert, Julie Lovins.
Hello.
She's back.
Boo on a budget.
This is one of my, you do so many creative things.
I love your Halloween.
decorations the most.
So one of the things that you've been
kind of able to do is recreate
things that actually are
kind of expensive. Really expensive.
And everything's so expensive right now.
Don't spend on Halloween. Well, what I love
about it is fun things you can do with your kids as well
too. This pumpkin.
This pumpkin is... Isn't this the coolest
thing? These are pumpkin lanterns.
I did make it. And you can make it
too. This is just...
Okay, so these lanterns retail right
now for $40-ish.
We're going to make it for about $2.
You just need a balloon, blow it
up, and then tie a string
around the balloon. This is three strings
and it looks like a pumpkin.
Toilet tissue. Everybody
has that at home already. Glue.
I'm not going to make this because it is
so messy. It is really, really
messy. You get the balloon.
Soak the toilet paper. You steal all the toilet
paper out of the bathroom.
Make sure there's an emergency roll under the
sink. So nobody gets stuck in there.
And then you're just going to pour the glue on it and brush it.
Let that dry.
And then if you want a white pumpkin, you're done.
If you want a colored pumpkin like the orange or the black, paint that.
Let that dry.
And once the glue and the paint has dried, pop the balloon.
So you repeat this every section of the balloon as you go along.
Let it totally dry and then pop the balloon.
And it won't pop the sides.
It'll just pull the top.
It just retracts on, is that a science word?
I think, possibly.
It pulls in on itself,
and then this is a strand of battery lights from the dollar store,
and stick that in the bottom.
You can't see it well on TV right now,
but at nighttime, it is beautiful.
I can't confirm.
The coolest glow, the black
and the orange together are kind of spooky, not scary.
That's what I like.
And I know this is not the finished product,
but I actually kind of like the purple one.
There you go.
well you could do that you it just won't light up
no it will not light up it's hard to get a it's
hard to get an LED and it kind of rolls everywhere it's
been everywhere this morning all right so
put the toilet paper over here the next thing we have
these are spooky spiders these retail right
now for six for 49 that's insane
so you just want to get a pom-pom some pipe cleaners and then i
lot of eyes be careful
when you glue these on use regular glue you can use hot glue if you use
hot glue, you can get a blister. I have one right now.
These are really, really cute. They're
perfect for hanging on the door, doorknobs, in the window.
These are great for kids too. It's
just something fun, not super scary.
The same thing with the felt garland. This is just, you
need a marker and a piece of felt, 25 cents.
Cut out, I'm going to give you this one. And you can
see where I've already cut some of those out
and just make it into garland, put it on a string,
and that's Ghost Garland.
What I love about this, too,
is especially for this year,
all right,
Halloween's on a Saturday.
Yeah.
A lot of these kids
don't go out trick-or-treating
until, you know,
like 4 o'clock in the afternoon.
All day.
You've got a whole day,
a whole day,
and I've been there
to keep the kids busy.
Get the sugar going.
And this is a great way
to kind of get them
excited about it.
You know,
they're not running
into their costumes
at 9 o'clock in the morning
trying to head out there.
See, it's things for them to do
while they're getting ready
to go out and trick-or-treat.
The same thing, they can also make mummy candy baskets.
This is just a plastic kitchen container.
I wrapped first aid gauze around it,
gave it some eyes, and put that on the deck
or whatever for trick-or-treating or for a Halloween party.
I'm going to grab this one.
You can also wrap masking tape around dollar store champagne flutes
and have an adult mummy champagne glass.
Of course, if you need any gauze or toilet paper,
Julie, yeah, you're in trouble.
We're going to take a quick break.
We're going to be right back with Julie.
There's the information on the screen right now.
It is 7:54.
We'll be right back.
